Dr. Jones’ Guide to Natural Painkillers for Pets Without Side Effects

Many of you reading this are going to have a dog or cat or know an online veterinarian who has been on an NSAID – Non Steroidal Anti inflammatory Drug.

Yes they can be effective for acute pain relief… .but I am avoiding them.

They can also have some serious side effects, they can DELAY healing, and should be avoided long term.

NEVER given to cats long term.

Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, not eating/eating less, and lethargy. If your pet experiences any of these potential side effects, STOP administering the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately. Veterinary NSAIDS may be associated with gastrointestinal ulcers/perforations, liver, and kidney toxicity.

Serious side effects associated with the use of NSAIDs can occur with or without warning and, in some cases, result in death. Use with other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as other NSAIDs and corticosteroids, should be avoided.

Several studies now show how when they block initial inflammation, they can delay healing, especially when you break a bone. The initial inflammation brings in cells to remove dead tissue, and cells that stimulate new bone growth.

In the realm of pet care, natural remedies are increasingly valued for their minimal side effects and effective pain management. This guide explores various natural solutions for pain relief in dogs and cats, focusing on their applications and benefits.

DMSO: A Potent Anti-inflammatory Agent

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a colorless liquid organosulfur compound known for its ability to penetrate the skin swiftly. It’s particularly effective when applied topically to joints affected by swelling and arthritis, typically administered twice daily.

Combining Natural Agents for Enhanced Relief

A holistic approach can involve combining DMSO with topical pain creams like Arnica gel, Traumeel, or CBD oil. This mixture should also be applied to the affected areas twice daily for optimal results.

Essential Oils for Pain Management

Mixtures of Frankincense (Boswellia) and Almond Oil, diluted with olive, coconut, or almond oil, are beneficial when applied topically to painful areas. These oils have been shown to be particularly helpful for dogs.

Ginger: Natural Anti-inflammatory

Ginger extract is notable for containing phytochemicals that help reduce inflammation, aiding in joint and muscle pain relief. It is best used in small doses, either steeped in boiling water as tea or grated into vegetable juice.

Heat/Cold Therapy: Managing Initial Injuries

Initial injury management often requires reducing blood flow to the area, with cold therapy being highly effective. After the initial swelling and pain subside, transitioning to heat therapy by using heating pads or heated braces can significantly enhance blood flow, oxygen, and nutrient delivery to the affected area, thereby reducing pain.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs): Dosing and Benefits

EFAs such as Flax, Fish, or Krill oil are crucial in therapeutic levels for pain management:

  • Flax oil dosage: 1 teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight, once or twice daily.
  • Fish oil dosage: 1000mg per 10lbs of body weight.
  • Krill oil dosage: 1000mg per 50lbs of body weight.

Castor Oil: An Effective Anti-inflammatory

Studies indicate that castor oil, when applied topically, effectively reduces inflammation and pain, significantly outperforming other treatments.

Homeopathic Remedies: Arnica 30C

Arnica 30C is a base homeopathic remedy excellent for acute injuries, muscle pain, stiffness, and swelling. The typical dosage is one capsule per 10lbs of body weight every 2-4 hours for acute injuries and daily for chronic management.

Cannabinoids: Natural Anti-inflammatory Agents

CBD and other cannabinoids (CBC, CGG, CBN) are shown to be potent natural anti-inflammatories and painkillers without delaying healing. The recommended dose is 3mg per 10lbs of body weight, administered once or twice daily.

Boswellia and Curcumin: Traditional and Modern Uses

Boswellia, also known as Frankincense, has been traditionally used to treat arthritis and boost the immune system. A beneficial dose is 10-20mg per 10lbs of body weight daily. In combination with 95% Curcumin, it offers a natural and effective pain relief alternative to traditional medications like Naproxen.
