9,600 Pounds of Puppy Food Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

Understanding Salmonella in Pets and How to Protect Them

As a veterinarian, I often encounter concerns about Salmonella, especially when it comes to contaminated chicken. Salmonella can be particularly dangerous for young puppies and kittens, as well as for our senior pets. The good news is that most animals experience only mild clinical signs from it, but it’s still something we should all take seriously.

The Role of the Microbiome in Protecting Your Pet

One of the key protective factors against Salmonella is your pet’s microbiome—the billions of beneficial bacteria in their intestinal tract. These bacteria play a vital role in keeping harmful pathogens like Salmonella in check.

However, many dogs and cats suffer from an altered microbiome due to various factors, including the use of antibiotics, disease, stress, or gastrointestinal issues. These changes can make them more susceptible to infections like Salmonella.

Why Probiotics Are Essential for Your Pet’s Health

To help maintain a healthy microbiome, I highly recommend considering a quality probiotic supplement. Our New Probiotic Supplement includes 8 different probiotic strains specifically designed for animals. It has been shown to be an effective treatment for Salmonella and can help restore balance to your pet’s gut.

Attention Dog Owners: 9,600 Pounds of Puppy Food Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

As a dog owner, it’s crucial to stay informed about potential health risks that could affect your furry friend. Recently, Blue Ridge Beef, a well-known dog food brand, announced a recall of several batches of puppy food due to the risk of salmonella contamination. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Recall: What Happened?

Blue Ridge Beef issued a recall of 9,600 pounds of puppy food after a customer reported that their pet became ill. A sample of the food was tested and confirmed to be contaminated with salmonella. As a result, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning pet owners in seven states: Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Affected Products: Which Puppy Food Batches Are Recalled?

The recall affects Blue Ridge Beef’s two-pound packages of frozen Puppy Mix. If you’ve purchased this product, check the details below to see if your batch is affected:

  • Brand: Blue Ridge Beef
  • Product: Puppy Mix
  • Package size: 2 lb
  • UPC Code: 854298001696
  • Lot Numbers: 08/06/N25 (lot) and 08/16/N25 (lot)
  • Distribution Dates: August 6, 2024, to August 23, 2024

If you have this product at home, the FDA recommends returning it to the place of purchase or disposing of it in a way that prevents access by children or animals. Additionally, you should wash and sanitize any pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers that may have come into contact with the product.

Symptoms of Salmonella: What to Watch For in Your Pet

Salmonella infection in pets can present in various ways. Symptoms include:

  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Abdominal pain

If your dog shows any of these signs or has consumed the recalled product, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Is Salmonella a Risk for Humans?

Yes, humans can also be affected by salmonella. According to the FDA, salmonella can be contracted from handling contaminated pet food, especially if proper handwashing isn’t practiced after touching the product or surfaces exposed to it. Symptoms in humans include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping and fever

In severe cases, salmonella can cause more serious complications, such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Healing Your Pet at Home

Fortunately, most dogs and cats with robust immune systems are rarely affected by salmonella. In my experience, the few cases I’ve seen involved pets eating birds that had died from salmonella. The cats I treated were very dehydrated and had mucous-like diarrhea. With antibiotics and IV fluids, they all recovered.

Be Aware, But Don’t Panic

While you don’t want your pet to contract salmonella, the risk is minimal. Always be cautious with food safety—especially with contaminated products—and never feed your pets food that could be tainted.
