Do Cats Love You Less Than Dogs? Here’s What I Think
The age-old question: do cats really love you less than dogs? As a pet parent myself, I’ve spent countless hours studying and observing the bond between pets and their owners. And, honestly, I get asked this question all the time! So, let’s dive into the science behind it and look at how both dogs and cats show affection.
Humans and Dogs: A Bond Built Over Thousands of Years
Humans and dogs have been living together for thousands of years. We’ve co-evolved in ways that help us communicate and bond with each other. Dogs, originally domesticated from wolves, have been a part of our lives in various roles—guarding, herding, and hunting. Over time, they’ve learned how to read us: our emotions, body language, and even our needs.
As a result, dogs like my own Tula, for example, know exactly how to express their love. Dogs are wired to understand us, to connect with us, and to want to please us. Tula shows her affection in so many ways: she’ll lean on me, give me plenty of physical contact, and of course, she loves to lick me. It’s her way of saying, “I love you!"
Signs of Affection from Dogs
When your dog loves you, it’s clear. You’ll see it in:
-
Eye contact: Dogs like Tula will stare into your eyes, and that’s a huge sign of affection. It’s their way of saying, “You’re my favorite person."
-
Tail wagging: A happy dog will wag its tail, showing excitement and joy when they see you.
-
Licking: Whether it’s a kiss on the face or a gentle lick on your hand, licking is how dogs express their love.
-
Cuddling: Dogs like to snuggle with their owners, showing that they feel safe and loved when close to you.
But What About Cats?
Then there’s my cat, Cassian. Cats are a bit more elusive, aren’t they? But the truth is, science is catching up with what many cat owners already know: cats can form strong bonds with their humans.
In fact, a 2017 study showed that when cats are given the choice between interacting with a toy, food, or a person, most of them choose their humans. That’s right—cats love us too!
Signs Your Cat Loves You
Cats show their affection in different ways, and once you know what to look for, it’s obvious! Some signs that your cat loves you include:
-
Purring: When your cat is purring, it’s a clear sign of contentment. Cassian does this all the time when he’s feeling comfortable and loved.
-
Slow Blinking: When a cat looks at you and slowly blinks, that’s a sign of affection. It’s like a cat’s version of a kiss!
-
Headbutting: Cassian will often headbutt me as a way of showing love and asking for more affection.
-
Sleeping on You: If your cat chooses to sleep near you, it’s because they trust you. Cassian is always sleeping by my side or on my lap when I relax. He follows me everywhere!
Oxytocin: The Love Hormone in Both Cats and Dogs
Here’s something interesting I’ve learned through research: both cats and dogs release a hormone called oxytocin when they bond with us. This is the same hormone released when humans feel love and affection. So, whether it’s Tula licking my face or Cassian following me around, they’re both releasing oxytocin and forming that deep bond with me.
So, Who Loves You More: Cats or Dogs?
The answer to the age-old question? Well, there’s no clear winner. Dogs and cats show their love in different ways. Dogs like Tula express their affection through constant physical contact, eye contact, and loyalty. Cats like Cassian may be a bit more independent, but they still form deep, secure attachments to their humans. The love is there; it’s just expressed differently.
Love is Different, But Both Are Strong
So, if you ask me, “Who loves you more, your dog or your cat?" I’d say it’s not about who loves you more. It’s about how different species express their love. Whether it’s a dog’s enthusiastic greeting or a cat’s slow blink, it’s clear that both cats and dogs can form strong, loving bonds with us.
