The Secret to Relieving Back Pain in Cats and Dogs

Natural Remedies for Back Pain in Pets

Hello everyone! If you’re keen to learn about natural pet health and wellness, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m going to talk about a common issue both our pets and we often face – back pain. From personal experiences to professional advice, I’ll share my top remedies for providing pain relief. Make sure to subscribe to Veterinary Secrets for more insights into pet health.

Recently, I encountered a back injury myself. It happened quite unexpectedly at the gym when I lifted a weight that was slightly beyond my capacity. Instead of resting, I chose to stay active, engaging in running and skiing, which exacerbated the problem. This situation is not unique to humans; our dogs and cats experience similar issues. Today, I aim to share the most effective remedies that have worked for me and can be equally beneficial for your pets.

Recognizing Back Pain in Pets

The first step in addressing back pain is recognizing the signs. Typically, pets with back injuries show reluctance to move and appear visibly uncomfortable. They might adopt a hunched posture or seem overly protective of the affected area, often refraining from jumping onto higher surfaces. The lower lumbar area, just above the tail base, is commonly affected. If your pet displays severe symptoms like difficulty walking or controlling bodily functions, a veterinary visit is crucial as they might require surgery for conditions like a disc prolapse.

Natural Pain Management Strategies

1. CBD and Multi-Cannabinoid Products

For managing pain naturally, my go-to remedy is CBD, both orally and topically. Products like Dr. Jones’s Ultimate CBD for dogs and cats and New Leaf Naturals Multi-Cannabinoid offer a blend of CBD, CBC, CBG, and CBN, known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. For pets (and myself), a dose of 3 milligrams per 10 pounds of body weight twice daily, coupled with a multi-cannabinoid product, can significantly alleviate discomfort.

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate CBD Formula is a liquid, available in either a 5ml (0.17fl oz), 15ml (0.5fl oz), or 30ml (1fl oz) bottle, with a medicinal quality dropper for very accurate dosage measurement.

2. Topical Treatments: Combining CBD and DMSO

Topically, I’ve found great relief using a combination of CBD and liquid DMSO. Applying CBD directly on the affected area of your pet’s back, followed by DMSO, enhances absorption and provides rapid pain relief. This method has worked wonders for my own back pain as well.

3. Muscle Relaxants: From Robaxin to Natural Alternatives

For muscle spasms, over-the-counter options like Robaxin (methocarbamol) are effective but must be used cautiously. Ensure the product is pure and doesn’t contain harmful additives like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, especially for pets. After seeking to move away from Robaxin, I discovered Valerian and Magnesium Glycinate, both natural muscle relaxants. Valerian offers a milder but effective relaxation, while Magnesium Glycinate, especially in its glycinate form, is well-absorbed and less likely to cause gastrointestinal upset.

4. Enhancing Sleep and Pain Relief: The Role of Melatonin

Lastly, consider Melatonin for your pet in pain. It not only promotes restful sleep but also plays a role in managing pain by interrupting the pain cycle. From my experience, incorporating Melatonin resulted in better sleep and a more comfortable waking state.
