Sugar-Free Products Can Kill Your Dogs and Cats

Why Xylitol Can Be Fatal to Dogs and Cats

Think “sugar-free” is safe for your pets? Think again. Many products marketed as healthy alternatives—gum, candies, even dental sprays—contain xylitol, a seemingly harmless sugar substitute that can actually be deadly to dogs and cats. Even a tiny amount can trigger dangerously low blood sugar or cause liver damage. Knowing what’s in your pet’s food, treats, and household products is critical for keeping them safe.

Warning: Sugar-Free Substitutes Can Be Deadly to Pets

I’ve never been a fan of “substitute” products—those chemicals that are supposed to be healthier but often come with hidden side effects.

When it comes to both humans and pets, it’s always safer to stick with things you know are real and can pronounce.

The same principle applies to our pets. One key nutrient that has been shown to make a huge difference in preventing and managing common pet health issues—like diarrhea and allergies—is probiotics, the good bacteria that live in the intestinal tract.

Most conventional pet foods don’t provide enough of these, but they can be incredibly beneficial. That’s why I created Dr. Jones’ ULTIMATE Probiotic Supplement for Pets—a complete, multi-strain, high-CFU formula with no additives. It’s already helping countless dogs and cats stay healthier from the inside out.

What Is Xylitol Poisoning?

I recently had a subscriber reach out after their dog was poisoned by xylitol in a so-called “safe” human medication.

Xylitol is in so many products, and pet owners need to be aware—it’s never safe for dogs or cats, even though it’s considered harmless for humans.

Where Xylitol Hides

  • Sugar-free foods: gum, candy, peanut butter, ice cream, baked goods, cereal, jam, ketchup, syrup, drink powders, pudding

  • Medications: chewable vitamins, cough drops, prescription meds

  • Dental care products: toothpaste, mouthwash

  • Beauty products: shampoos, moisturizers, deodorants

Why Xylitol Is Dangerous

In humans, xylitol doesn’t affect insulin or blood sugar. But in pets, it triggers a rapid release of insulin, causing hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar).

At higher amounts, it can also cause liver damage or liver failure in dogs. While xylitol toxicity hasn’t been fully documented in cats, it’s safest to avoid it entirely for all pets.

If your dog ingests xylitol, go to a veterinary emergency hospital immediately.

Symptoms of Xylitol Poisoning in Dogs

Signs are mostly related to low blood sugar and may include:

  • Vomiting

  • Weakness or loss of balance

  • Stumbling or lack of coordination

  • Lethargy or depression

  • Tremors or seizures

  • Collapse or coma

Symptoms can appear as early as 30 minutes after ingestion, but sometimes take up to 12 hours.

Xylitol Poisoning FAQs

How much xylitol is toxic to dogs?

  • Hypoglycemia can occur with as little as 0.045 grams per pound (0.1 g/kg)

  • Liver damage can occur with 0.11–0.22 g/lb (0.25–0.5 g/kg)

  • Even one piece of gum can poison a 20-pound dog

How quickly does xylitol act?

  • It’s absorbed fast. Symptoms may appear within 30 minutes or up to 12 hours later.

How do I know if my dog is poisoned?

  • If your pet ate anything containing xylitol—or you suspect it—you need emergency care immediately.

  • Watch for vomiting, weakness, coordination issues, lethargy, seizures, or collapse.

Most serious illnesses caused by xylitol?

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)

  • Liver damage or failure at higher doses

Healing and Prevention

The most important thing you can do is read every label. Especially if it says “artificially sweetened,” check the ingredients.

I even saw a pet dental rinse in a pet store that contained xylitol. Just because it’s marketed for pets does not make it safe.

On a brighter note, one of the simplest ways to support your pet’s health is through probiotics. I’ve personally taken probiotics for 30 years, and I firmly believe they’re among the most important supplements for both humans and pets.

  • Gastrointestinal disorders

  • Stress and anxiety
