Dog Coughing Sounds: Kennel Cough, Heart Disease, Bronchitis, Tracheal Collapse

Kennel Cough, Heart Disease, Bronchitis, and Tracheal Collapse

If your dog is coughing, it can be hard to know what is actually going on.

One dog may sound like they have kennel cough. Another may be coughing because of heart disease. A small breed dog may have tracheal collapse. Another dog may have chronic bronchitis.

The tricky part is this: many coughs sound very similar.

That is why it is important to understand the most common causes, what signs to watch for, and which natural remedies may help while you are getting to the root problem.

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Canine Advanced Plus Health Formula

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Canine Advanced Plus is a holistic, natural nutritional supplement designed to support the health and vitality of dogs. This formula is in powder format that you can mix with your dog’s food or a treat, and it comes in two sizes, a 30-day supply and a 90-day supply (based on dogs up to 50lbs – for larger dogs, refer to the dosing recommendations below to ensure optimal benefits).

Kennel Cough

The Classic Honking, Gagging Cough

Kennel cough often sounds like a dry, hacking cough followed by gagging or retching.

It may show up after your dog has been around other dogs at a boarding facility, groomer, dog park, daycare, or shelter.

Many dogs with kennel cough are still bright, eating, and drinking. They just have that irritating cough that sounds far worse than they feel.

Natural Support for Kennel Cough

One of my favorite remedies is honey. It coats the throat, soothes irritation, and has natural antibacterial properties.

Another good option is propolis spray, also called bee glue. It comes from honeybees and can help reduce throat inflammation while also offering antibacterial support.

For a coughing dog, propolis can be sprayed into the throat to help calm irritation.

Coughing After Trauma or Injury

When the Throat or Trachea Is Irritated

Sometimes a dog starts coughing after an injury, rough play, pulling hard on a collar, or being attacked.

In that case, the cough may be coming from inflammation around the throat or trachea.

If your dog has been injured and starts coughing, I strongly suggest getting them examined. There may be more going on than simple irritation.

What May Help

For mild throat irritation, honey or propolis may help soothe the airway. The goal is to reduce inflammation and calm the cough while the tissues recover.

Bronchitis in Dogs

Chronic Airway Inflammation

Some dogs develop chronic bronchitis, which is inflammation in the airways.

These dogs may have a wheezy cough or a whistling sound when they breathe or cough. It can resemble asthma in people.

Conventional treatment often includes prednisone because it reduces airway inflammation. It can help, but long-term steroid use comes with side effects.

Natural Support for Bronchitis

CBD may be worth considering for dogs with airway inflammation. It has anti-inflammatory effects and may help reduce discomfort and anxiety.

A typical starting dose is 1 mg per 10 pounds of body weight twice daily, though some dogs may need higher doses depending on response.

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate CBD Formula for Dogs

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate CBD Formula for Dogs and Cats: Full Spectrum CBD supplement in 100% Organic Cold Pressed Hemp Oil. Dr. Jones’ Ultimate CBD Formula is a liquid, available in 3 sizes: 300mg (5ml, 0.17 fl oz), 900mg (15ml, 0.5 fl oz) and 1800mg (30ml, 1 fl oz), simply choose the size you’d like above. Each bottle comes with a medicinal quality dropper for very accurate dosage measurement

Heart Disease Cough

When Fluid Buildup May Be Involved

Dogs with heart disease may cough because fluid builds up in or around the lungs and airways.

This type of cough may happen more at night, after lying down, or after exercise. Some dogs may also seem tired, breathe faster, or have a known heart murmur.

If your dog has a heart murmur and starts coughing, this needs a proper workup.

Natural Heart Support Options

Two natural options I often think about are dandelion leaf and hawthorn.

Dandelion leaf can act as a natural diuretic, helping the body remove excess fluid.

Hawthorn supports the heart muscle and may help the heart pump more effectively. It can also support blood vessel dilation, making circulation easier.

These do not replace heart medication when needed, but they can be part of a supportive plan.

Tracheal Collapse

Common in Small Breed Dogs

If you have a small breed dog with a chronic honking cough, tracheal collapse needs to be considered.

This is especially common in breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, and toy breeds.

The trachea, or windpipe, becomes weakened and partially collapses. This triggers coughing, especially when excited, pulling on a collar, drinking, or breathing cold dry air.

What I Suggest First

Remove the collar and use a harness.

You do not want pressure on the airway.

Add humidity to the home. Moist air can soothe the airway and reduce coughing.

Honey can help during flare-ups.

CBD may help reduce inflammation and anxiety.

Curcumin may also help because it is a strong natural anti-inflammatory.

Licorice root can be helpful short term for airway inflammation. A common tincture dose is about 0.5 ml per 20 pounds of body weight twice daily.

Why Diagnosis Matters

A cough is just a symptom.

It may be kennel cough.
It may be bronchitis.
It may be heart disease.
It may be tracheal collapse.
Sometimes, more than one problem is happening at the same time.

This is especially true in older small breed dogs. They may have a heart murmur and tracheal collapse together, which makes the cough harder to interpret.

That is why I always encourage a proper exam and workup if the cough is ongoing, worsening, or paired with low energy, breathing difficulty, or appetite loss.

When to Get Veterinary Help Quickly

Please do not wait if your dog has:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Blue or pale gums
  • Collapse
  • Severe lethargy
  • Coughing with known heart disease
  • A cough that persists or worsens
  • Fever or not eating

Those are not “wait and see” situations.

My Takeaway

Dog coughing can sound similar across many different diseases.

The key is looking at the bigger picture.

Is your dog young and recently exposed to other dogs? Think kennel cough.

Is your dog small with a honking cough? Think tracheal collapse.

Is there a heart murmur or nighttime cough? Think heart disease.

Is the cough chronic and wheezy? Think bronchitis.

Natural remedies like honey, propolis, CBD, licorice root, curcumin, dandelion leaf, and hawthorn can all have a place, but the first step is understanding the cause.
