How to Get Rid of Dog Dandruff and Cat Dandruff

The skin ages, and as skin cells die they turn into white flakes… dandruff. So what can you do to get rid of it? Here are five ways to deal with dog dandruff or cat dandruff.

Regular Brushing

Regular brushing is vital for your pets’ health and hygiene. Brushing your pet’s fur helps in distributing natural oils evenly throughout their coat, enhancing skin health and thus reducing dandruff. However, make sure to choose the right comb and brush, especially for pets with long fur. Brush daily or weekly, depending on your pets’ fur type. The more you brush, the better results you’ll achieve in keeping your pet dandruff-free.

Proper Nutrition

A healthy diet is crucial to maintain healthy skin and fur for your pets. Ensure that their food contains proper nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, along with additional omega-3 fatty acids. You can also opt for natural ingredients in your pets’ diets, such as pumpkin, coconut oil, and fish, as they have proven to boost skin health. Also, avoid feeding them too many processed or artificial foods that could cause an allergic reaction or skin irritation, leading to dandruff.

Natural Supplements

Natural supplements can work wonders in enhancing skin health and reducing the appearance of dandruff in pets. Omega-3 supplements promote healthy skin and fur growth, while probiotics enhance their immune system, reducing skin problems such as dandruff. Consider a quality essential fatty acid supplement such as Dr Jones’ ULTIMATE Omega 3 Formula for dog and cats. [https://shop.veterinarysecrets.com/supplements/ultimate-omega3-formula.html]

Moisturize their Skin

Moisturizing your pet’s skin is an effective way to reduce dandruff and keep their skin healthy. Use all-natural pet-safe moisturizing oils such as coconut, sunflower oil, and shea butter to avoid skin irritation. Apply the oil to your pet’s skin once a week or according to their fur type to keep the skin moisturized and thus prevent dandruff.

Regular Baths

Just like us humans, pets need regular baths to keep their skin and fur clean and fresh. However, too many baths can also cause dandruff. Bath your pets once a month or according to their breed and fur type to maintain a balance between cleanliness and skin health. Use natural, organic shampoos specifically formulated for pets, as human shampoos can sometimes cause irritation.

Bathing is very important if your pet has dandruff, but choosing the right shampoo is key. Harsher ‘human’ shampoos will dry out the skin, leading to dandruff. Also some pets that have dandruff have an underlying yeast problem, so that may 1st need to be treated.

If your dog/cat is itchy, and with excess dandruff, then consider a yeast shampoo applied once a week for 4 weeks. One option is Selsun Blue which I often used in veterinary practice.

Another option is a homemade anti-yeast shampoo. Most dogs with a strong odor/dandruff have an underlying overgrowth of yeast or bacteria on their skin. Usually this is secondary to an allergy.

Yeast can be hard to eliminate. Although one kitchen ingredient works especially well… Apple Cider Vinegar.

Here’s the Yeast Shampoo RECIPE:

  • 3/4 of a cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of Castile Soap
  • 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
  • Pet Formulated Shampoos

Another effective option can be a a balanced, complete pet shampoo that can get rid of the dandruff, and help kill some of the yeast that often are causing the smell. Our 5-in-1 natural pet cleans, conditions, deodorizes, moisturizes, and detangles, and will NOT dry out your pet’s skin.
