My first cat had recurring bouts of sneezing, nasal discharge, runny eyes…  the Cat Flu.

I tried a TONNE of things, including antibiotics, but this one ingredient (which just so happens to be in Ultimate Feline), made all the difference.

It was the amino acid L-lysine, which has been shown to help with the Cat Flu.

CAT FLU

SIGNS

The most obvious sign is a cat with a runny nose, often accompanied by swollen and runny eyes. Most cats will also be sneezing.

CAUSES

Two feline viruses are responsible for most cases of cat flu. Some cats can be infected as kittens and constantly harbor the virus, making them prone to repeated infections. In most cases, the virus will run its course in seven to ten days, so supportive care is needed.

SOLUTIONS

KEEP YOUR PET EATING – One of the best ways to help your cat’s immune system is by ensuring adequate food intake. Warm up favorite canned food, or add a small amount (one-eighth teaspoon) of garlic. If your pet’s regular food is not appetizing, switch to canned tuna.

ORDER UP FLORIDA – Humidity is fabulous for easing congestion and improving breathing. Use a humidifier, or put your cat in the bathroom and turn on the shower.

WIPE AWAY – Use a damp cloth to wipe crusted discharge around the nose and eyes. If the eyes are infected apply topical black or green tea drops 4 times/day.

OPEN THE AIRWAYS – For some cats with severe nasal congestion, I have used Pediatric Otrivin. Use one drop in each nostril three times daily for three to five days.

HOMEOPATHIC: ALLIUM CEPA – Useful for watery nasal discharge causing sneezing; give one 30C twice daily for five to seven days.

HONEY HELP – 1/2 teaspoon of dark, unpasteurized honey mixed with 1 tablespoon of green tea given twice daily can decrease inflammation, and provide anti-viral activity.

FLAVONOIDS- QUERCETIN –  These are the beneficial nutrients found in the peel of apples, red onion etc. Quercetin has antiviral activity, being studied as a treatment for COVID 19. It also has been shown to be a beneficial anti-inflammatory in cats. Doses of our whole plant quercetin supplement of 50mg/10lbs daily.

AMINO ACID LYSINE – L-lysine has proven antiviral activity and is a mainstay in treating and curing cats with recurrent herpes virus respiratory infections. It comes as a veterinary paste (Enisyl). The dose is 1 ml (250 mg) twice daily for at least twelve weeks.

OBJECTIVE :

To examine the effects of orally administered L-lysine on clinical signs of feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) infection and ocular shedding of FHV-1 in latently infected cats.

ANIMALS:

14 young adult, FHV-1-naive cats

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE:

Once daily oral administration of 400 mg of L-lysine to cats latently infected with FHV-1 was associated with reduced viral shedding following changes in housing and husbandry but not following corticosteroid administration. This dose caused a significant but short-term increase in plasma L-lysine concentration without altering plasma arginine concentration or inducing adverse clinical effects.

P.S. If you have a cat with recurring Flu like signs, I encourage you to at least TRY some Lysine.

It of course doesn’t need to be from me, but it does need to be the right form, in an adequate dose.

Ensure that you give it for at least 8 weeks to assess its effectiveness.
