Safe Flea Treatments for Dogs & Cats: Natural Remedies That Work

Avoid the Toxins: Natural Flea Remedies Your Pets Will Thank You For
Fleas. They’re small, persistent, and can turn your cozy home into a battleground. Conventional flea treatments may promise fast results, but the toxic chemicals can put your pets’ health at risk. That’s why I’ve spent years exploring safe, effective, and natural alternatives that actually work. From aromatic herbs and neem oil to cedarwood sprays and nematodes in the garden, there are countless ways to keep fleas at bay without exposing your pets to harmful toxins.
One remedy I rely on more than any other is Diatomaceous Earth—a simple, all-natural powder that’s been helping my pets stay parasite-free for years. Now, you can give your pets the same protection safely at home.

Avoid the Toxins: My Best Natural Flea Remedies
Fleas can be SO difficult to deal with, especially when they get into your home. The conventional options might look quick and effective, but the toxic ingredients can be harmful to your dogs and cats.
Repeated exposure to pesticides or other chemicals should have you concerned. Whenever possible, think holistic.
I’ve used this holistic remedy for years—first in my garden to stop slugs from eating my lettuce, then in my house to treat fleas, and finally, giving it orally to my dogs and cats to help eliminate worms.
It’s safe, fairly effective, and completely natural: Diatomaceous Earth.
We now have our own certified organic, food-grade Diatomaceous Earth for pets:

Natural Flea and Tick Preventives
Here’s a rundown of the most effective natural flea control options I’ve used personally:
Bad-Smelling Herbs
Aromatic herbs can help repel fleas. Pennyroyal and catnip are the most effective. One study even isolated a compound in catnip that’s extremely effective at repelling fleas. I personally use a catnip oil spray on my cat, and it works great!
Chinchilla Dust (Diatomaceous Earth)
This is the skeletons of microscopic algae. Make sure to get the kind meant for pets, not the type used in swimming pools. Apply weekly during flea season in your home, and vacuum three days later. You can also use it directly on pets.
Natural Control in Your Yard
Nematodes—microscopic worms that prey on flea larvae and pupae—can be purchased at garden stores. A small canister contains millions of these little helpers. Follow the directions and spray them on damp, bushy areas in your yard.
Make Your Pet Taste Bad
Garlic and brewer’s yeast have been suggested as flea repellents. In my experience, it helps some dogs, but it’s worth a try. Do not give garlic long-term to cats.
For a 10-pound dog:
-
¼ teaspoon garlic
-
¼ tablespoon brewer’s yeast
Daily.
Cedarwood Oil Spray
Cedarwood oil is relatively nontoxic and effective against fleas. Be careful with cats or small dogs—lightly mist them, then use a flea comb to distribute the spray evenly.
Dehumidify Your Home
Fleas need humidity to survive. Eggs need 75% humidity to hatch, and larvae need 50% to survive. In dry areas, less than 5% of eggs survive. Using a dehumidifier can significantly reduce the flea population in your home.
Herbal Flea Remedies
Natural Pyrethrins: Feverfew Flowers
These flowers were the original source for flea sprays. Steep a handful in hot water, cool it, and pour over your dog or cat. This temporarily paralyzes fleas.
Flea and Tick Repellent Spray Recipe
I’ve developed a safe, holistic spray for dogs and cats using:
