My dog has a skin allergy on his hind end that I just can’t seem to get rid of. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
A common culprit is allergies, fleas, or irritation around the tail and hind end. Check closely for fleas and try a gentle, soothing bath while keeping the area clean and dry. If it keeps coming back, it is worth having your vet check for the underlying cause rather than just treating the itch.
I liked the two videos on assessing the dogs condition before just running to the vet. If you can treat it at home, then do it. Dr. Jones explains everything very thoroughly. Thank you
We’re big believers in knowing how to assess your pet first and knowing when home care is appropriate. And of course, there are times when a vet visit is absolutely the right call. The goal is simply to help you feel more confident and informed along the way.
There are common sense things you talk about in your teachings on treating your pets at home. As a life time dog owner, and a parent, I have found that there are a lot of treatments that used on a child, can also be used for a pup. For instance the rice for diarreah, as a baby, if one has this you give it rice water…..baby aspirin for aches and pains, etc. Knowing these things in advance and through my own experiences with pups, validates for me that you do in fact know what you are talking about. That’s saying a lot today when there are so many scammers dreaming up new ways to make/take a buck. Thank you for sharing.
There is definitely a lot of common sense in caring for our pets, but it’s also important to remember that dogs and humans are not exactly the same, especially when it comes to medications. We’re all about giving pet parents practical, safe tools to help their animals at home. Thanks for being part of the Veterinary Secrets community!

The goal is to help you feel more confident knowing when you can safely support your pet at home and when it’s time to call your vet. Our Home Healing Course covers exactly that, including at home exams and first aid. And remember, when in doubt, getting your vet involved is always the smart move.
I enjoy your daily news very much. I will be working on doing those exams. I have two dogs and keeping another while the owner is in prison. I have had problems with the male marking and pooping in the house. Any good hints? I also think he didn’t like the rain this week. Ha Ha
With the marking and pooping, consistency is key. Give him plenty of outdoor breaks, reward him when he goes in the right spot, and clean indoor accidents really well so the smell doesn’t invite a repeat performance. And yes, some dogs absolutely seem to think rain means the bathroom is closed!
how often would you give the herbal tonic with flaxseed, nettle, dandelion and alfalfa- and are there any dietary restrictions you should consider-IE pancreatitis prone dogs?
We’d start with a small amount once daily and see how your dog responds. For a pancreatitis prone dog, we’d be a little more cautious and keep the overall diet low in fat. The herbs themselves are not a treatment for pancreatitis, so if your dog has active pancreatitis, check with your vet first.
