What’s REALLY in Your Dog or Cat’s Food?

Have you ever wondered what’s actually in your pet’s food? As shocking as it may seem, the reality is unsettling. According to Susan Thixton from Truth About Pet Food, the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine permits practices that might leave you horrified.

What the FDA Says

Dr. Steven Solomon, director of the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, openly admits that the FDA allows the disposal of illegal waste—according to federal law—into pet food without any warning or disclosure to consumers. In his words, “we do not believe that the use of diseased animals or animals that died otherwise than by slaughter to make animal food poses a safety concern, and we intend to continue to exercise enforcement discretion.”

Yes, you read that right. The FDA doesn’t see a safety issue with using diseased or non-slaughtered animals in pet food. This means that when you’re feeding your dog or cat, there’s a chance you’re giving them meat sourced from animals that were either diseased or decomposing.

Disturbing Evidence From Pet Food Manufacturing

The image below, taken from a pet food manufacturing plant, is a distressing visual representation of what could be in your pet’s food. If you’re squeamish, you may want to look away. It’s no wonder that pet owners who have come across such horrors have taken to social media to share their alarming discoveries.

What You Can Do

If you ever come across something unusual or concerning in your pet’s food, I urge you to report it to the FDA. Your voice could help bring about change in the pet food industry.

How to Avoid Unhealthy Pet Foods

Want to ensure your pet is eating safe, quality food? Here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Purchase pet foods labeled as Human Grade: Make sure the label explicitly says “Human Grade,” and don’t rely on claims made solely on websites.

  2. Choose foods made with human-grade ingredients: Reach out to the manufacturer and confirm that all the ingredients in the pet food are human-edible.

  3. Stop feeding kibble: Consider eliminating kibble from your pet’s diet, as many brands may contain low-quality ingredients.

  4. Make some of your pet’s food at home: Preparing homemade meals allows you to control what goes into your pet’s diet. Check out my blog for free recipes—just search for “homemade pet food.”

  5. Feed Raw Pet Food: Many pet owners have found that raw food diets are a healthier alternative for their pets.

By being informed and proactive, you can help protect your pet from the dangers lurking in their food. The choice is in your hands—ensure it’s a healthy one.
