How to Treat Bladder Stones in Pets: A New NON-INVASIVE Approach

If I saw bladder stones in a dog/cat while in practice, I often recommended surgery.

It’s what vets do well- BUT it may not always be needed.

Here is something that may not be needed, but may be able to keep your dog/cat healthy and away from the vet.

On Youtube I discussed a study which showed great results for treating cancer using low dose Panacur, plus antioxidant Vitamins A and E- both of these, PLUS Astaxanathin (another potent antioxidant) are in good levels in Krill oil.

Chanca piedra, known scientifically as Phyllanthus niruri, is a tropical herb that grows in the lush rainforests of South America. It has earned the nickname “stone breaker" because of its reputed ability to help dissolve kidney stones.

The Benefits of Chanca Piedra for Kidney Stones

Chanca piedra is renowned for its potential benefits in managing kidney stones. It acts as an alkalizing agent, possibly helping to prevent the formation of acidic kidney stones. This makes it an affordable, over-the-counter alternative to prescription potassium citrate. Moreover, it might promote increased urination, aiding in stone expulsion. Research, including a study involving 56 individuals with kidney stones, suggests that taking 4.5 grams of chanca piedra daily can reduce the size and number of these stones in a significant number of cases. Further small-scale human studies have supported these findings.

Chanca Piedra’s Role in Treating Calcium Oxalate Stones in Pets

While less common than struvite stones, calcium oxalate stones in pets can be challenging to treat. These stones tend to form when the urine pH is too low. Treatment strategies include:

  • Reducing dietary oxalates (avoid spinach, soy, and potatoes)
  • Increasing fluid intake through canned foods and home-prepared diets
  • Slightly raising the urine pH, traditionally with sodium citrate. However, chanca piedra might be a safer and equally effective alternative.

Chanca piedra has been used widely with few reported side effects. The suggested dosage for dogs and cats is 100 mg per 10 lbs of body weight daily.

    1. Yes it is and the herb has alkalizing properties that may help prevent gallstones and acidic kidney /bladder stones from forming.

    1. Depending on what type of stones your dog has Madelon there are other options.

In most cases of bladder stones and bladder infections the goal is to acidify the urine; this prevents the recurrence of the most common bladder stone, struvite. Diets higher in protein are more acidifying; specific veterinary diets are designed for acidification. A higher protein homemade diet is also suitable.

VITAMIN C. This acidifies the urine and may prevent the recurrence of bladder stones and bladder infections. Start with a low dose of 100 mg per 10 lbs daily.

CRANBERRY. A traditional home remedy used for people with recurrent urinary tract infections. The beneficial effects are from the acidification of the urine and by making it more difficult for the bacteria to adhere to the bladder wall. The dose of the juice is 1 ml per lb daily, add the dose of the tablets, such as CranActin, is 1/2 capsule per 10 lbs daily.

PROBIOTICS. If your pet is on antibiotics for a urinary tract infection, it is a good idea to supplement with Lactobacillus to restore the healthy bacteria that are lost. The dose is 1/4 capsule per 10 lbs of body weight daily.

  1. Is Chanca Piedra okay to give dogs who don’t have stones but have a low (acidic) ph and would like to see ph more alkaline?

    1. Chanca Piedra is generally considered safe for dogs and is often used to support urinary health. While it is commonly associated with the prevention and management of kidney stones, it may also have benefits for dogs with low (acidic) pH levels. However, before introducing any new supplement, including Chanca Piedra, it’s essential to consult with your veterinarian. They can provide personalized advice based on your dog’s specific health needs and conditions. Additionally, they may suggest other dietary adjustments or supplements to help achieve a more alkaline pH if that is necessary for your dog’s health.
