NEW Natural Oral Flea and Tick Prevention: Diatomaceous Earth, Brewer’s Yeast, and a DIY Flea Spray That Works

Plus My Homemade Flea Spray That Actually Works
Fleas can be so difficult to deal with.
And yes, they can survive just fine in December… especially inside your home.
I have seen how frustrating this can be for pet parents. You think you have it under control, then suddenly they are back again.
Conventional options can work quickly. But many contain pesticides, and repeated exposure to those chemicals should make you pause. We now know they can affect your pet at a deeper level, even influencing gene expression over time.
That is why I always encourage you to think more holistically when possible.
Dr. Jones’ Diatomaceous Earth Powder for Pets

A Simple Natural Option I Have Used for Years
One of my go-to remedies is diatomaceous earth.
I have used it in my garden to stop pests, in my home for fleas, and even given it orally to help with parasites.
It is:
- Natural
- Safe when food grade
- Fairly effective when used consistently
Just make sure you are using food-grade diatomaceous earth, not the type used for pool filters.
Natural Oral Flea Prevention Options
1. Bioticks
This is a plant-based oral supplement made with ingredients like thyme, rosemary, lemongrass, fenugreek, and wormwood.
It works in a simple way. It changes your pet’s scent slightly, making them less attractive to fleas.

What I like about it:
- Studies show flea reduction of over 80 percent in dogs
- Works gradually over time
- No reported side effects
- Easy to give in food daily
It is a good long-term option, especially if you want to avoid chemical treatments.
2. Diatomaceous Earth
Also called chinchilla dust, this is made from microscopic algae skeletons.

You can:
- Apply it lightly to your pet
- Sprinkle it in your home
- Vacuum after a few days
Use it weekly during flea season.

3. Make Your Pet Less Appealing to Fleas
Garlic and brewer’s yeast can help repel fleas.

In my experience, it helps in about 30 percent of pets. Not perfect, but worth trying.
For a 10 lb dog:
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic
- 1/4 tablespoon brewer’s yeast daily
Used in small amounts, garlic is safe for both dogs and cats.
4. Ultrasonic Devices
Devices like Tickless emit high-frequency sounds meant to repel fleas and ticks.

They are:
- Chemical-free
- Safe for young and pregnant pets
The science is mixed, but some pet parents do find them helpful.
My Natural Flea and Tick Spray Recipe
If you want something you can use right away, this is one of my favorite topical sprays.
Key Ingredients
Neem Oil
A natural insecticide with anti-inflammatory and antifungal benefits. Safe when diluted to 2 percent or less.
Cedarwood Oil
One of the most effective natural flea and tick repellents.
Coconut Oil
Helps soothe the skin and has mild insect-repelling properties.
Witch Hazel with Aloe
Supports skin health and reduces irritation.
Castile Soap
Helps kill fleas and allows the oils to mix properly.
The Recipe
- Witch Hazel with Aloe: 1 cup (250 ml)
- Coconut Oil: 2 tablespoons (30 ml)
- Neem Oil: 2 ml
- Cedarwood Oil: 40 drops
- Castile Soap: 1 tablespoon (15 ml)
This keeps the essential oils at about 1 percent dilution, making it safe for dogs and cats.

How to Use It
- Shake well before each use
- Lightly mist your pet
- Use a flea comb to spread it through the coat
Use:
- 2 to 3 times per week for dogs
- Once weekly for cats
If your home is cold, you may need to warm the mixture slightly so the oils stay liquid.
My Takeaway
There is no single magic fix for fleas.

The key is consistency and layering your approach.
- Use natural oral support
- Treat the environment
- Apply safe topical solutions
- Check your pet regularly with a flea comb
That is how you stay ahead of the problem.

P.S. Flea control is about staying consistent. A quick check each day goes a long way.
P.P.S. If you are using diatomaceous earth, make sure it is food grade. It is one of the simplest and most cost-effective tools to have on hand.
