Mystery Dog Respiratory Illness: 2024 Update

In recent times, thousands of dogs across North America have been struck by an alarming respiratory disease. This illness, initially resembling kennel cough, has been labeled as an atypical cough by veterinarians due to its peculiar nature. Alarmingly, the disease swiftly escalates from a chronic cough to severe acute pneumonia, showing resistance to standard treatments. This rapid progression has led to fatalities, prompting specialists and veterinarians to scramble in search of the underlying cause.

Possible Causes

Experts in veterinary medicine suggest multiple culprits behind this outbreak. Pathogens such as bordetella, parainfluenza, and mycoplasma are considered potential contributors. Moreover, the trend of outbreaks in colder seasons points to environmental factors, as dogs are often in closer quarters during fall and winter. Additionally, the recent surge in dog acquisitions during the Covid era, combined with a mix of respiratory pathogens, is suspected to play a role in the spread of this disease.

Comparison to Past Diseases

This situation draws parallels to the parvo virus outbreak of the early 1980s, which similarly affected hundreds of dogs and resulted in numerous deaths due to a lack of immunity. The current mystery illness, if stemming from a novel pathogen, poses a significant threat, evidenced by the thousands of cases and the absence of effective preventative or curative measures.

Current Status

Thankfully, there’s a glimmer of hope. The frequency of reported cases has seen a decline, and veterinarians are now more adept at managing the progression from cough to acute pneumonia. Notably, Chloramphenicol, an older veterinary drug, has emerged as a highly effective treatment. Caution remains paramount, however, with recommendations to avoid crowded dog areas. Interestingly, home remedies like green tea cough syrup, cartenkin, and propolis have gained attention for their potential benefits in treating respiratory diseases.

While the mystery dog illness remains a concern, the situation has notably improved compared to just over a month ago. Rest assured, any further developments will be promptly shared, ensuring that pet owners stay informed and prepared to protect their furry companions.

  1. My little shihzu has a respiratory infection. At first I thought she was just snoring. No other symptoms. Yesterday I could hear alittle rattle. I have done cupping, moving the Doterra Breathe in front of her, last night I sprayed some Fluticasone on my finger and move it around in front of her face and touch the front of her nose. Last night was a rough night. Our water has been off, because this past week we went through snow and ice outside. It is back on today, so I did a steam bowl with my sink and did hot water to creat steam. She is sleeping right now and breathing is sounding good. I did order the stuff to make the tea. All I have is tea, local honey and I do have lemon juice in a bottle. Which is suppose to be 100%. I have heard lemon is toxic. I also order the last herb pill you recommended, it will not be in till the 26th. Is there anything else I can do until then. I am going to do another steam bowl before we go to sleep tonight. Dr. Jones, I so appreciate you. Sadly I think my vet had led me down the wrong path on some things. I will write that in another post.thank you so much. Lisa, @lmullins1961@yahoo.com

    1. Here are some SYMPTOMATIC treatment we have:

      * COLLAR. Remove collar

      * HUMIDITY. Provide additional humidity

      * HONEY REMEDY. 1/2 teaspoon of honey with 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice(per 10lbs of body weight), diluted in warm water given 2-3 times/day is very helpful, and more beneficial than anyOTC cough syrup

      * SLIPPERY ELM. I have found Slippery Elm to be very helpful as well – mix in 400mg/10lbs daily as it can coat the throat giving symptomatic relief

      * LICORICE ROOT TINCTURE. is very helpful for cough, and a proven antiviral. The dose is 1/2 a ml of the tincture/20lbs twice daily

      * ELDERBERRY. This has been studied to be very helpful in people with a cold/flu virus, and one of the few natural remedies shown to decrease the length and severity of infection. A standard dose is 100mg/10lbs twice daily. I prefer the concentrated elderberry crystals, then mix with water and honey
