1. The issue of pet overpopulation is VERY real…we as a society need to better decrease the number of unaltered dogs and cats.
2. Economics sadly often dictate pet ownership..many of these dogs were once owned, yet now they are left on the street to fend for themselves.
3. IF you are considering another pet, please visit your local animal shelter
4. Donate to your local shelter- IF you don’t have the $$ donate time
5. I myself regularly donate- and a percentage of ALL sales of Veterinary Secrets goes to my local animal shelters.

I live about 45 miles from Detroit. Many people have lost jobs as well as their homes in the area. Pets of all sorts are being dumped into shelters, or left to fend for themselves, as folks don’t have enough to feed themselves, much less their pets. Sadly, vets in this area won’t come down in price for neutering, so many pets are just left to keep producing offspring. Some money is better than no money, vets could make up the difference with volume….right? Lower prices would allow people to come to vets for pet care, and both sides win!
The stray and shelter crisis is a complex issue, and many of these pets were once loved family animals before circumstances changed. Spaying and neutering, supporting shelters, and helping owners access affordable care are all important pieces of the puzzle. We can all help where we can, whether that’s donating, volunteering, or adopting from a shelter. Every little bit makes a difference.

This issue needs more awareness and more people stepping up in whatever way they can, whether that is adopting, donating, volunteering, or simply sharing the message. Every little bit helps make a difference for these animals who need us.
I think what is being done for he dogs is very heart warmimg. And it’s true vet’s can come down on their prices money means more to them than the dogs do. What about someone thinking about the cats in this dilema.
They are often the forgotten ones in these situations, and the stray cat population is a very real concern as well. Dogs and cats both need our compassion, support, and responsible care. Spaying and neutering, helping local shelters, and supporting rescue groups can make a huge difference. Every little bit of kindness helps these animals get a better chance.
I have just received an email to say that the Rumanian government will, on Monday 7 March, lift a two year ban on killing stray dogs. Any stray dog, including healthy ones and those in rescue shelters, will be killed. They don’t say how they will be destroyed, but I suspect those who carry out the killings will not be too bothered about the method and the suffering they might cause. Owners of rescue shelters who try to resits will be accused of obstructing the law. When the European Union has recognised that dogs are feeling beings, how can they stand aside and let this happen?
It is heartbreaking to see so many stray animals suffering. The bigger picture is that pet overpopulation is a very real issue, and the solution has to include prevention, education, spaying and neutering, and better support for shelters. Every dog and cat deserves compassion and a chance. Supporting local rescues, adopting, and helping where we can all make a difference.
