I was riding my mountain bike, decided to go a little BIG on a jump, resulting with me in the air, off my bike, down onto a rock, landing on my left shoulder and collarbone… then a long walk down the bike trail and off to emergency.
It did require surgery, so I am now walking around with extra hardware. I did whatever I could to speed healing, and naturally deal with pain!
The active ingredient isolated from turmeric (95% Curcumin), is a wonderful holistic pain reliever, so I immediately started to add it into my healing regimen.
An awesome option if you have a dog/cat with a fracture, or wound, especially one that has had surgery.

How to Speed Bone Healing for Dogs and Cats, and Injured YouTube Veterinarian
As a veterinarian, I’ve not only seen the challenges pets face with bone injuries, but I’ve also personally experienced the healing process as an injured YouTube vet. There are several natural remedies that can significantly help speed bone healing in both pets and people. Here’s what I’ve found to be effective:
1. Bone Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium
Calcium and magnesium are essential for bone health, making them important for the healing process. Supplementing with these minerals can potentially speed up recovery. For pets, I recommend the following dosages:
Calcium: 50-100 mg per 10 lbs daily
Magnesium: 20 mg per 10 lbs daily
2. Speed Healing Minerals
Zinc
Zinc plays a crucial role in bone healing, as shown in studies. One study specifically highlighted that zinc supplementation can stimulate fracture healing. I’m currently taking this myself! Here’s the recommended dosage for pets:
Zinc: 5 mg per 10 lbs daily
Vitamin C
Vitamin C has been found to enhance bone formation in animal studies due to its antioxidant properties and its role in osteoblastic proliferation. While human studies are still inconclusive, the evidence in animals shows promise. I suggest:
Vitamin C: 50 mg per 10 lbs daily
3. Comfrey – “Knitbone"
Comfrey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for healing bones, which is why it’s often referred to as “knitbone." Modern studies have confirmed its effectiveness for treating pain, inflammation, and swelling in muscles and joints.
Application:
Topical: Apply a comfrey salve to the affected area 4 times per day.
Homeopathic: Administer 1 30C capsule per 20 lbs, 4 times daily for the first 5-7 days, then reduce to twice daily.
4. Horsetail Herb
Horsetail is another herbal remedy known for its high silica content, which promotes bone density and tissue regeneration. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it great for healing bones, tendons, and ligaments.
Recommended Dosage:
Horsetail: 1 mg per 10 lbs daily
5. Cannabinoids: CBD and CBG
Research on cannabinoids, specifically CBD and CBG, has shown that they not only help with pain management but also improve bone healing. A study conducted on mice found that cannabinoids led to higher bone volume fraction and mineral density compared to traditional NSAIDs.
Curcumin, the active component in turmeric, has been shown to aid in bone healing. A 2018 study revealed that curcumin promotes femoral fracture healing by influencing bone remodeling and cell autophagy.
There are many ways you can help speed up bone healing naturally for your pets. Something as simple as supplementing with Vitamin C can make a big difference—and it’s very affordable.
