What’s Safe to Feed Your Dog: Avoiding Heart Disease in Your Pet
I’m sure you’ve heard about the recent FDA report linking certain dog foods to heart disease, specifically dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). It’s a type of heart condition that’s been tied to grain-free diets that include peas and lentils. In fact, the report mentions 16 brands of dog food that may be contributing to this problem. This finding has left many of us, including me, wondering: what can we safely feed our dogs?
While we don’t yet know the definitive cause behind these heart issues, we do know that there are over 500 cases that are being linked to certain diets. The last thing you want is to be unknowingly feeding your dog food that could be harmful. So, let’s take a closer look at some dog food options that are safe, nutritious, and free from the controversial ingredients.

Why Variety is Key in Your Dog’s Diet
Now, you might be wondering, “What kibble am I feeding Tula?" Well, when I do feed her kibble, I choose Instinct by Nature’s Variety. It does contain peas and chickpeas, which are part of the debate surrounding heart disease, but it’s not her only food source. I mix it up with raw food and homemade meals, ensuring she gets a wide variety of nutrients.
Here’s the takeaway: don’t rely on just one food. Whether it’s kibble or canned food, variety is crucial. I always encourage dog owners to offer their pets a mix of different foods, so they’re not solely dependent on one brand or formula. By doing this, you’re ensuring that your dog gets a range of nutrients that can support their health.
Final Thoughts
I know you’re doing your best to provide your dog with the best nutrition possible. If you take one thing from this, let it be this: feed your dog a well-rounded diet with a variety of food sources. This will not only help keep them healthy but will also reduce the risk of any one ingredient causing harm.

This whole article is ridiculously inaccurate. “The FDA has linked Grain Free Dog Foods with a type of Heart Disease in dogs, DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy).” <–This statement is completely FALSE. THE FDA HAS NOT OFFICIALLY LINKED ANY FOODS TO DCM AT THIS TIME. The investigation is not even brand related. It is an investigation into specific ingredients that was commonly found in grain-free diets. STOP FEAR MONGERING THE SHEEPLE!
