The Power of Diatomaceous Earth for Pets: Safe and Holistic Parasite Control

I’ve been using Diatomaceous Earth for years—not just in my garden to keep slugs away from my lettuce, but also in my home to treat fleas, and even giving it to my dogs and cats to help eliminate worms. It’s incredibly effective, very safe, and completely natural. That’s why I’ve made sure we now offer Dr. Jones’ Diatomaceous Earth Powder for Pets, a certified organic, food-grade diatomaceous earth specifically formulated for your furry friends.

What Is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a naturally occurring mineral rock formed from the remains of diatoms—microscopic algae from ancient oceans. These diatoms were compressed into a chalky, clay-like substance over millions of years. The result is a fine, siliceous powder known as diatomaceous earth.

In addition to being an effective tool for body cleansing, some research shows that DE can help promote normal blood lipids, detoxify the body of heavy metals, and fight harmful intestinal organisms. When used correctly, it can be a game-changer for your pet’s health.

Is Diatomaceous Earth Safe?

Absolutely. It’s critical to use Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth—meaning it’s safe for pets and people to ingest. DE is a non-toxic substance made from crushed fossils of freshwater and marine organisms. Under the microscope, the particles of DE resemble tiny shards of glass. While it is deadly to insects, it’s perfectly harmless to animals.

5 Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth for Dogs and Cats

  1. A Natural Source of Silica: Supports Joint Health and Bone Strength
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is about 85% silica, a trace mineral essential for maintaining healthy bones, tendons, blood vessels, and cartilage. Silica has been shown to support joint health, which is especially beneficial for pets with injuries, like dogs suffering from ACL issues.

Studies have linked dietary silica to improved bone mineral density and better joint formation, making it a great supplement for your pet’s skeletal health.

  2. Flea Control: A Safe, Non-Toxic Solution
If your pet has a flea problem, Diatomaceous Earth can help. Start by combing your pet with a flea comb to remove the worst of the fleas. Then, dust your pet from head to toe with DE, making sure to get under the legs and the belly. DE works by dehydrating the fleas, effectively controlling infestations. You can also use it in your home—sprinkle it on cracks and crevices to prevent fleas from hiding.

  3. Detoxify the Body: A Natural Cleanse
Diatomaceous Earth is a natural detoxifier. It works by absorbing toxins from the body, including parasites, viruses, and harmful bacteria. It can help clean the digestive tract, boost liver function, and absorb harmful toxins in the blood. Silica in DE also aids in eliminating heavy metals like aluminum, which has been linked to various health issues.

I’ve seen DE work wonders for pets who have been exposed to environmental toxins, like excessive Vitamin D from certain pet foods or those suffering from poisoning.

  4. Internal Parasite Control: A Holistic Alternative
If you’re looking for a natural way to treat parasites like roundworms or tapeworms, Diatomaceous Earth is one of the most effective holistic options available. DE has been proven to help control parasites in animals, and I’ve used it as part of a natural parasite cleanse for my pets in the spring and fall.

A study in the Oxford Journal of Poultry Science found that DE is effective at controlling parasites in hens, and the same applies to pets, making it a safe and natural parasite treatment option.

  5. Immune System Support: Strengthening Defenses
Silica in Diatomaceous Earth plays a critical role in the immune system. It helps your pet’s body produce antibodies that fight off viruses, bacteria, and allergens. DE can be beneficial for pets suffering from viral infections like cat flu or chronic skin conditions in dogs. It helps the body defend against harmful invaders, promoting overall health.

How to Use Diatomaceous Earth for Your Pet

Internal Use:

  • Small Dogs: ½ tsp per day

  • Dogs under 50 lbs: 1 tsp per day

  • Dogs 50-100 lbs: 1 tbsp per day

  • Dogs over 100 lbs: 2 tbsp per day

Simply mix the appropriate amount of DE into their food. For wet food, mix it well. For dry food, add a small amount of water, mix in the DE, and stir it into the food.

External Use:

Diatomaceous Earth is also excellent for treating external parasites like ticks and fleas. Dust it onto your pet’s skin and coat, as well as their bedding and areas where they frequent (like carpeted areas or cracks in the floor). Just be careful not to let your pet inhale the dust, and use it in moderation.

If your pet has an unpleasant odor or a stinky coat, you can create a refreshing mask for them with DE, coconut oil, and a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

  1. Hi Dr. Jones: Look, I have found another product that acts in the same way (drying out the exoskeleton (sp?) of bugs like fleas, etc. It is called Terre de Sommiere. Used in France. Can be bought on-line. It’s a very fine powder but without the cutting issues of diatomaceous earth. Also used for bedbugs and any other creepy crawlers.

    1. Terre de Sommière works in the exact way you described—its ultra?fine powder mechanically abrades and dries out the waxy exoskeleton of insects (like fleas, bedbugs, etc.), causing dehydration and death, much like diatomaceous earth
      .
It avoids the respiratory/cutting risks often associated with diatomaceous earth because it’s finer.
You can safely sprinkle it in areas where your pet spends time (carpets, bedding, yard), but avoid inhalation and keep it away from your pet’s eyes and nose

  2. Want to try this out. The flea poison I put out in the past two months ( 2 bags) is not killing them. I have to comb Patches every time she comes in.

    1. Yes, Terre de Sommière sounds like a great option—especially since those flea poison bags haven’t worked for you recently. According to the link, it works similarly to diatomaceous earth by mechanically removing the protective wax layer of insects, causing them to dehydrate and die ?. As a fine powder, it’s safe to sprinkle on carpets, pet bedding, and around entry areas, and avoids the cutting or respiratory issues often tied to diatomaceous earth. It could help reduce the fleas you’re combing off Patches without using chemicals.

  3. One thing I wonder about is if they aren’t suppose to breath it how do they not when it’s on their beds and on the carpet? Wouldn’t it be like dust and become airborne when they walk around or lay down in their beds? I want to use this super bad but I’m afraid they will breath it in.

    1. Diatomaceous Earth can become airborne, and pets (or people) can inhale the dust—which may irritate lungs over time
But Terre de Sommière, mentioned in the comments, is even finer and less abrasive, making it safer—just still avoid inhalation directly

      ? What to do:

Lightly dust bedding or carpets—not a heavy layer

      Vacuum well after 12–24 hours

Keep pets out during application and reflection period

Store and apply in areas with good ventilation

  4. I’ve been using DE for approx 10 months for my 5yr old St. Bernard. I give her 2.5 tblsp in her food
1x fortnight I rub into her , in the summer months and although we haven’t got rid of the fleas entirely they’re less but still have them. I do sprinkle on her bedding, along skirting boards and areas she lays frequently . I’m really concerned she still has them and now areas of her white for have turned pink from the fleas irritation. I need to add I bathe her in flea shampoo once a week in summer months less in the winter
Do you have any other advise alongside the DE ?
She’s an amazing dog and this is making her miserable ?
    Many thanks ?

    1. You’re using DE well—inside and out—but to boost results:

Use Food?Grade DE Internal Dose: ½ tsp per 10?lb twice daily for 21 days helps target internal parasites—could cut down flea numbers too

Topically Dust Thoroughly: Continue sprinkling on coat, bedding, and common areas—combine with weekly flea combing and bathing.

Try Terre de Sommière: A finer powder alternative that works like DE (dehydrates fleas) but with less risk of skin/respiratory irritation

Add Natural Flea Spray: Homemade mix with 2% neem oil + witch hazel, coconut oil, cedarwood/lavender essential oils is effective and safe

      Also consider:

Beneficial nematodes in your yard to break the flea lifecycle.

Consistent vacuuming, washing bedding, and dehumidifying to reduce environmental fleas

Combining these more intensive DE protocols with alternate powders and a natural repellent spray should significantly reduce her flea load and soothe her irritated skin.
