CBD Doesn’t Even Work?

What the Research Says About CBD for Pain, Seizures, and Cancer Support

I recently read an article titled something like, “CBD for dogs and cats: where is the scientific evidence?”

The author’s main point was simple:

CBD does not have enough research behind it, and pet parents may be wasting their money.

So, is that true?

Are you wasting your money buying CBD for your dog or cat?

In my opinion, no.

CBD is not a magic cure-all. It will not fix every condition, and it is not going to work for every pet. But to say there is virtually no evidence is just not accurate.

There are now multiple studies showing benefits for pain, arthritis, seizures, and potential cancer support.

What Is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol.

It is one of the active compounds found in the hemp plant. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive, meaning it does not get your dog or cat “high.”

CBD works with the endocannabinoid system, a natural system already present in the body. Dogs, cats, and people all have this system. It helps regulate pain, inflammation, immune response, mood, sleep, and neurologic function.

That is why CBD is being studied for so many different conditions.

CBD for Arthritis and Pain

One of the strongest areas of CBD research in pets is pain, especially arthritis pain.

A 2018 Cornell study looked at CBD use in dogs with osteoarthritis. The dogs were given CBD and monitored for pain and activity changes.

The findings were encouraging.

There were no obvious side effects, and the dogs showed a reduction in pain scores.

That matters.

Many older dogs struggle with arthritis, stiffness, limping, and trouble getting up after resting. Conventional pain medications can help, but they can also affect the liver, kidneys, and stomach, especially with long-term use.

This is one of the reasons I like CBD as a natural pain support option.

I saw this with my own dog, Tula. When she was stiff and uncomfortable, CBD helped her move better and feel more comfortable.

And I have heard from many pet parents who have seen the same thing.

CBD for Seizures in Dogs

The second major area of research is epilepsy.

A Colorado State University study led by Dr. Stephanie McGrath looked at CBD for dogs with seizures.

In that study, dogs were given CBD at a dose of 2.5 mg per kg every 12 hours, along with their regular anti-seizure medications.

The results were impressive.

About 89% of the dogs treated with CBD had a decrease in seizure activity, compared with a much smaller response in the control group.

Yes, it was a small study.

Yes, CBD was used alongside conventional anti-seizure medication.

But that is still a very promising result.

For dogs with epilepsy, CBD may be a helpful adjunct, especially when seizures are not fully controlled with standard medication.

CBD and Cancer Support

CBD and other cannabinoids are also being studied for cancer support.

This is an area where we need to be careful.

I am not saying CBD cures cancer.

But the research is worth paying attention to.

Cannabinoids have been shown in some studies to potentially:

  • Support cancer cell death, also called apoptosis
  • Reduce new blood vessel formation, also called angiogenesis
  • Affect cancer cell spread, also called metastasis
  • Help with pain, appetite, anxiety, and quality of life

Dr. Joseph Wakshlag at Cornell has also looked at CBD and cancer cell lines, adding more interest to this area of research.

I also know of many anecdotal cases from pet parents.

One former client had a dog named Oscar with a very serious mouth cancer. She was told he may only live about a month. Oscar was started on CBD, and he lived two years.

Was that entirely because of CBD?

I cannot say that.

But I also cannot ignore stories like that, especially when the research is continuing to grow.

CBD Is Not a Cure-All

This is important.

CBD will not work for every dog or cat.

It may not help every cancer.
It may not stop every seizure.
It may not take away all arthritis pain.

But it can be a very useful natural tool.

And in many cases, it has a wide safety margin, few side effects, and can be used alongside other treatments when done properly.

CBD Dose for Dogs and Cats

A common starting dose is:

1 mg per 10 pounds of body weight daily

For some conditions, especially pain or seizures, higher doses may be needed.

With my CBD formula, each drop contains 2.5 mg of CBD.

For a small dog like Tula, I would often start with one drop twice daily.

Many pets tolerate CBD well, especially when it is in a good carrier oil such as hemp seed oil.

What to Look for in a CBD Product

Not all CBD products are the same.

Before buying CBD for your dog or cat, ask these questions:

  • Is it a tincture?
  • Is it made from hemp?
  • Where are the plants grown?
  • How is the CBD extracted?
  • Is it tested for contaminants?
  • Is the dose clearly listed?
  • What carrier oil is used?
  • Is it free of artificial additives?
  • Is it safe for pets?

You do not need to use my CBD, although of course, I would like that.

But whatever you choose, make sure it is a quality product.

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate CBD for Dogs and Cats

This is why I formulated Dr. Jones’ Ultimate CBD for Dogs and Cats.

It is a full-spectrum CBD supplement in hemp seed oil, made for easy dosing in dogs and cats.

I wanted something concentrated, simple, and practical for pet parents to use.

CBD may be helpful for:

  • Arthritis pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Seizure support
  • Anxiety
  • Inflammation
  • Cancer support
  • Comfort and quality of life

It is not a replacement for proper diagnosis or emergency care.

But it is one of the natural options I think every pet parent should at least know about.

My Takeaway

So, does CBD work?

In many cases, yes.

The research is still developing, but it is not fair to say there is no evidence.

We have studies on arthritis pain.
We have studies on seizures.
We have emerging research on cancer support.
And we have thousands of pet parents reporting real benefits in their own dogs and cats.

CBD is not hype.

It is a serious natural option worth considering.
