Can Your Cat Be Depressed?

Just like humans your cat can get depressed. Some of the signs include sleeping more, hiding, and more. But before you turn to prescribed medications, there are natural remedies you can do at home to help your cat.

Signs of Depression in cats:

  • Sleeping more
  • Hiding more
  • Less interaction
  • Less interest in food
  • Looking more unkempt – not grooming themselves as frequently
  • Issues with using litterboxes

Why does this happen?

  • If cats are left alone for long periods of time
  • Moving! Cats can get bonded to their homes.

So, now what?

  • Take them to your vet
    • Do they have any underlying issues?
  • Considering antidepressants if required

Environmental enrichment is important – spending time, playing (playing ‘fetch’ with treats, or laser pointers).

Supplements for alternative options:

  • L-Theanine: this supplement is isolated from green tea and amino acid.
    • Dose: 25mg/10lbs of body weight each day
  • Lavender Oil: This oil can be helpful for anti anxiety purposes, but it’s important to be used safely.
    • 20 drops in 1 cup water used in a diffuser
  • CBD Oil: Can be helpful for kitties with anxiety or depression
    • Dose: 3mg/10lbs of bodyweight per day – that is 1 drop of my oil a day. (linked below!)
  • Catnip! Murray loves his catnip and goes crazy for it! This could be a great option.

Cats can definitely feel anxiety and depression – you can try some of my alternative suggestions before trying antidepressants.
