Today, I’m diving into a claim I’ve seen circulating: Can Panacur, a common dog and horse dewormer, actually help treat cancer? You might be surprised to know that many people believe this $5 wormer could potentially treat metastatic brain cancer. But is there any truth to this? Can it help your dog or cat if they’re battling cancer?

What is Panacur, and How Does It Work?

Panacur (the brand name for fenbendazole) is a well-known dewormer that’s been used in millions of dogs and cats to treat parasites. However, some studies have shown that Panacur might do more than just kill worms. It may actually help fight certain types of cancer.

Fenbendazole is considered a microtubule destabilizing agent, which essentially means it can disrupt the structure of cancer cells and lead to their death. Some research has shown it might be effective against four serious types of cancer:

  1. Non-small cell lung cancer – A tough cancer to treat in people.

  2. Lymphoma – Unfortunately, dogs can get lymphoma quite frequently.

  3. Prostate cancer – Another difficult-to-treat cancer.

  4. Glioblastoma – A type of brain cancer.

The Dosage for Cancer Treatment

Fenbendazole has been used safely in dogs and cats as a dewormer for years. In fact, it’s very well tolerated by both species.

For dogs, the standard deworming dose is 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, given once daily for three days. If you’re using the liquid form of Panacur, it’s 100 mg per ml, so for a smaller dog like Tula, she would get about 5 ml (500 mg) once daily for three days.

When used for cancer treatment, the dosage remains the same: 50 mg per kilogram, given once daily for three days, with a break of four days off. If your dog or cat shows improvement, you can continue with this regimen.

For cats, if they weigh around 5 kg (about 10 lbs), they would get 200-250 mg, which is roughly 2-3 ml of the liquid form, given once daily for three days.

Does Panacur Work for Cancer?

So, is Panacur the magic cure-all for cancer? Unfortunately, no. It’s not a miracle treatment that’s going to end all types of cancer. But do I think it could help some pets with cancer? Yes, I do.

If one of my pets, like Tula, were diagnosed with cancer, I would absolutely give Panacur a try. I’d use the standard regimen of three days on, four days off, and evaluate her progress over a two-week period to see if I noticed any improvements. At the very least, I believe this treatment would do no harm and might provide some benefit, especially since cancer treatment options can be so limited.

My Opinion: A Potential Alternative

In my view, Panacur isn’t the answer to all cancer treatments, but it could be part of an alternative cancer treatment plan. Considering the lack of options in treating cancer in pets, I think it’s worth exploring as a supplemental treatment.

So, is it a cancer treatment myth? No, but it’s also not a miracle cure. I think it’s somewhere in between, and it’s worth considering as an alternative option for some pets.

  1. Hi, Our Basset was diagnosed with a Brain tumor. Seizures started in Sept and occurred every 2-3 weeks, then in clusters and became more frequent to about every week. We started Panacur-C and have done 3 days on and 4 days off for 5 treatments (weeks) now, along with CBD. In this time we have reduced her phenobarbital with the goal of eliminating it. She is still on Keppra. She has now gone 4 weeks without a seizure. How many Panacur-C treatments can we do? Can we continue every week or should we take a break from it? It seems like it is helping based on the time we are seeing between seizures

  2. Fantastic! We need all the vets out there who are wholistic to step forward.
We need the truth in our health knowledge for ourselves and our animal kingdom.
I have only had my pets with wholistic vets, had to travel miles in some cases over the decades. This was even before I trained as a herbalist.
Really excited to download my free book and follow the videos. I will pass this link on for sure!
