Understanding Lupus in Dogs
Lupus is an immune-mediated disease that occurs when your dog’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own DNA. This complex condition has intrigued researchers and veterinarians alike due to its unique origins and effects.
The Origins of Lupus
The term “lupus" hails from ancient times, initially thought to be linked to a wolf’s bite due to its severe impact. In your dog, lupus manifests when the immune system reacts to DNA, leading to the production of antibodies. These antibodies can deposit in various tissues, aiding in the diagnosis of the condition.
The Manifestations of Lupus
Lupus can affect the joints, causing immune-mediated joint disease, or the skin, resulting in a condition known as Discoid Lupus. This leads to an escalating cycle of inflammation as more immunologic cells are attracted to the site, causing further damage.
Types of Lupus: Systemic and Discoid
When most people refer to lupus, they mean Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which is a Type III hypersensitivity reaction affecting multiple organs. However, there is also Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), a milder form confined to the skin, particularly the nasal planum, and predominantly seen in dogs.

Sun Exposure Management
Intense sunlight can exacerbate lupus, so it’s crucial to limit your dog’s exposure. While sunscreens are recommended, many contain toxic ingredients that can be harmful if licked off your dog’s nose.
Medications
- Tetracycline and Niacinamide: This combination, used three times daily, shows effectiveness in 70% of dogs but can be inconvenient due to its frequency.
- Prednisone/Prednisolone: Oral steroids can quickly control the condition, typically within a month, but side effects like panting and increased appetite can occur.
- 0.1% Tacrolimus (Protopic): This topical immunomodulator is effective for DLE and safe if licked, making it a practical option for treatment.
Alternative Therapeutic Options
Natural Remedies
- Tattooing the Nose: An alternative to sunscreen, this method permanently protects the affected area.
- Natural Steroids: Licorice Root Tincture can be used both orally and topically mixed with coconut oil to reduce inflammation.
- Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, such as 500mg of Krill per 30lbs of body weight daily, can significantly decrease inflammation.
Cannabinoids
- CBD, CBG, CBC: Targeting CB2 receptors, these cannabinoids have shown promise in treating autoimmune diseases. They can be applied both orally and topically, and I strongly recommend trying them for conditions like ‘Collie Nose’.

My sharpei was putting his nose in unfamiliar places and when he came in it was like his nose exploded into four sections. The vets and the laboratory had never seen
Anything like this.
Without a Dx we increased his Jones Canine powder times 10, gave him Tylenol, used a wet cloth to clam his head and put antibiotic ointment,
The next day it was worse.
The dogs nose in the picture discussing lupus was the closest thing I have seen.
So perhaps something triggered a hard first attack.
