Arthritis Pain Stopped Naturally? My Experience Using Castor Oil for Pain and Inflammation
Arthritis pain, inflammation, sore joints, stiff muscles.
Unfortunately, these are incredibly common in both dogs and cats as they age.
And if you are anything like me, you are always looking for something that is:
- Safe
- Natural
- Easy to use
- Actually helpful
Recently, I decided to try something on myself first before suggesting it for pets.
The result honestly surprised me.
Undenatured Type II Collagen for Arthritis Relief in Dogs
What is also especially helpful for dogs with arthritis is our Dr. Jones’ Undenatured Type II Collagen Joint Care Chews for Dogs. One of the key ingredients is UC-II® undenatured type II collagen, which works very differently from standard joint supplements. Instead of simply trying to “rebuild” cartilage, UC-II helps calm the overactive immune response that targets and damages joint cartilage in arthritis. Studies have shown it may help improve mobility, reduce stiffness, and decrease pain, especially in dogs struggling to get up, climb stairs, jump into the car, or walk comfortably after resting.
We also included other proven joint-supportive ingredients that help support cartilage, connective tissue, inflammation, and overall mobility. I especially like using it for older dogs with chronic arthritis, active dogs with joint wear and tear, larger breeds prone to hip and knee issues, and dogs recovering from orthopedic injuries.
It is one of those supplements that works best when started early, before severe arthritis develops, but I have also seen many senior dogs become noticeably more comfortable while on it.

Can Castor Oil Help Arthritis Pain Naturally?
I have been dealing with a painful condition called plantar fasciitis.
It affects the bottom of the foot, especially where the soft tissue attaches near the heel. In my case, just pressing on the area caused real pain.
Unfortunately, once you hit the 50+ crowd, things start breaking down a bit.
So I started thinking:
Could a simple natural oil actually help inflammation and pain?
The oil I decided to try was castor oil.
What Is Castor Oil?
Castor oil comes from the castor bean plant.
Most people know it as a natural laxative used in both people and animals.
But what many people do not realize is that castor oil contains a compound called ricinoleic acid, which has been studied for its anti-inflammatory effects.
That got me curious.
Could it help localized pain naturally?
My 24-Hour Castor Oil Test
I figured before recommending it for dogs or cats, I should test it myself first.
So I became the guinea pig.

I applied castor oil directly onto the painful area of my foot four times throughout the day.
That was it.
No stretching.
No other anti-inflammatory products.
No medications.
Nothing else.
Just castor oil.
What Happened After 24 Hours?
The next day, I checked the exact same painful area.
When I pressed on the tissue near my heel, it was definitely less painful.
Did all the pain disappear?
No.
Was it noticeably more comfortable?
Absolutely.
And honestly, that surprised me.
Because I had not changed anything else.
Does Castor Oil Really Work for Dogs and Cats?
Do I think castor oil is some magical cure for arthritis?
No.
Do I think it is another really useful natural option to add to your toolbox?
Yes, I do.
If your dog or cat has a localized painful area:
- A sore wrist
- An inflamed joint
- Mild arthritis
- Soft tissue soreness
Castor oil may be worth trying.

One thing I especially like is that if your pet licks a little bit of it, it is generally very safe. It may loosen the stool a bit because of its laxative effect, but it is not considered highly toxic when used reasonably.
That is important because many topical products are not safe if licked.
How to Use Castor Oil for Pets
Simple Topical Directions
- Apply a small amount directly to the sore area
- Massage gently into the skin
- Use 2 to 4 times daily
You do not need a huge amount.
A light coating is enough.
Why I Like Simple Natural Remedies
One of the things I have learned over the years is that some of the simplest remedies are often overlooked.
Castor oil is inexpensive.
Easy to find.
Easy to apply.
And based on my own experience, it may genuinely help reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Especially for older dogs and cats dealing with mild arthritis or localized joint pain.
Final Thoughts on Castor Oil for Arthritis Pain

If your dog or cat has chronic pain, arthritis, or inflammation, I still think you need a complete plan:
- Weight management
- Joint supplements
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Gentle exercise
- Physical therapy
- Proper veterinary care
But castor oil may be another simple natural option worth adding in.
Especially if you are looking for something topical, safe, and inexpensive.

P.S. I honestly did not expect much from this little experiment. But after less than 24 hours, my foot was noticeably more comfortable. That definitely got my attention.
P.P.S. If your dog or cat has a localized painful area, castor oil may be worth trying. Sometimes the simplest remedies surprise you the most.
