A Rescue in Tulum That Needs Your Help
What I Saw at Alma Animal Tulum
I recently came back from a trip to Mexico. It was a wonderful time. I was in Tulum on the Yucatán Peninsula with my wife, my brother, and his wife. It was meant to be a simple family trip.
But something unexpected happened.

After a yoga class, we started chatting with our instructor, Jairo. He found out about Veterinary Secrets and told me he volunteers at the only animal shelter in the entire Tulum area. He said it was deep in the jungle, hard to find, and home to a lot of animals. He also said to be ready. It might feel overwhelming.
He was right.
One Shelter. Hundreds of Animals.
We followed Hiro in his truck out into the jungle.
What we found was not just a shelter. It was a true rescue.

There are over 150 dogs and about 50 cats being cared for there. Every animal has a story. Some were abandoned. Some injured. Some simply had nowhere else to go.
This is not a place that only takes the most adoptable animals. If an animal is in need, they take them in.
The People Behind It
The shelter is run by Maria and her family.
They are doing this on their own. No government support. Just commitment, compassion, and a lot of hard work.

Maria knew every single animal by name. That tells you everything.
They vaccinate, deworm, treat for fleas and ticks, manage heartworm, and work to spay and neuter as many animals as possible.
And they feed them. Think about that for a second.
Feeding over 200 animals every day.
That alone is a huge responsibility.
What the Animals Are Really Like
What surprised me the most was how friendly they all were.
The dogs were social, calm, and just wanted attention. Many were living together in large groups, yet there was no aggression. Just wagging tails and curious faces.

These are dogs that have been through a lot, yet they are still open, still trusting.
The cats were just as special.
One young cat lay on her back while I rubbed her belly, purring the whole time. Another big, friendly cat named El Gordo came right up for attention. He reminded me of Cassian.
These animals are not broken. They are ready for homes.
The Reality of Rescue
Not every story is easy.
We saw a dog recovering from a gunshot wound. Another had survived a severe accident and lost part of his jaw, yet he was still eating and enjoying life.

There was a mother dog with puppies, some of which had been attacked before being rescued.
This is real rescue work.
Why These Dogs and Cats Are So Special
I have seen many pets adopted from Mexico over the years.

One thing stands out. They are resilient.
They have what we call hybrid vigor. They have survived heat, parasites, and tough conditions. They are strong, adaptable, and often very healthy.
And on top of that, they have great personalities.
How You Can Help
This shelter needs support. That is clear.
If you are in a position to adopt, I would strongly encourage you to take a look. There are incredible dogs and cats there who would make amazing companions.

If adoption is not an option, there are other ways to help:
- Donate if you can
- Share their story
- Follow their social pages
- Help raise awareness
Even a small action can make a difference.
They have a Facebook page, Instagram, and a website, along with options for monthly support. Every bit helps.
What I Am Doing
For my part, I am committed to helping.
We are supporting the shelter financially. We are helping with their website. We are donating a portion of sales and contributing personally.
They are doing important work, and I want more people to know about it.
My Final Thoughts
This visit stayed with me.

It is not easy to see that level of need. But it is also inspiring to see what one family can do when they step up.
Maria and her team are making a real difference.
If more people knew about this shelter, it would change everything for them.

P.P.S. Even sharing this story helps. The more people who know, the more support these animals can receive.
