Alma Animal Tulum: A Shelter in Paradise That Needs Your Help
What I Saw at Alma Animal Tulum
It’s easy to look away and do nothing.
Hundreds of abandoned animals. No government support. No corporate backing.
And this is all happening in what most people would call paradise.
My Visit to Tulum
I was recently on a trip to Mexico with my wife Catherine, my brother Michael, and his wife Shannon.
While we were in Tulum, we met our yoga teacher, who also volunteers at the only animal shelter in the area. He invited us to visit.
We spent over two hours there, deep in the jungle, on a private property caring for hundreds of animals.
It was eye opening.
Hundreds of Animals. One Mission
There were so many dogs and cats. Many of them had been through serious trauma.
Some were abandoned. Some were injured. Some had simply been left behind.
And yet, they were still there. Still alive. Still hopeful.
All because one person made it her life’s work to help them.
The Woman Behind It All
I met Maria, the founder.
She is doing this with no government or corporate support. Just her, her family, and a few volunteers.
She has named every single animal. She knows them all.
That tells you everything you need to know about how much she cares.
A Shelter Built From Nothing
Alma Animal Tulum started with a simple goal.
Help the animals that no one else would.
What began as rescuing a few injured and abandoned dogs and cats quickly grew into something much bigger.
At times, Maria even lived at the shelter just to keep it going.
This is not a business. It is a mission.
From a Few Animals to Hundreds
The need in Tulum is overwhelming.
The shelter has grown from around 80 animals to more than 150 at any given time, often beyond capacity.
These are not easy cases.
Many arrive:
- Injured
- Malnourished
- Abandoned
- Returned after failed adoptions
But they still say yes.
Because if they don’t, who will?
More Than Just a Shelter
This is not just a place where animals are kept.
It is a lifeline.
They provide:
- Emergency rescue and medical care
- Rehabilitation for injured and neglected animals
- Spay and neuter programs
- Adoption support
Every day is hands on. Every day is work.
The Reality They Face
The challenges are constant.
- Overcrowding
- Limited funding
- Ongoing construction needs
- A community still struggling with pet care
Even with land secured, maintaining and building a proper shelter is a daily challenge.
It is a balance between saving more lives and having enough resources to care for them properly.
What It Felt Like Being There
At one point, I was standing in the dog area with our guide, watching all these friendly dogs come up to us.
So many of them just wanted attention.
It was overwhelming.
I honestly wanted to take a bunch of them home.
Then I went into the cat area and spent time with Maria.
Seeing her care for each animal, knowing every name, doing everything she can with what she has.
That stayed with me.
