Introduction to Safe and Effective OTC Medications for Dogs

Today, I want to share with you seven over-the-counter (OTC) medications that I’ve regularly used and am comfortable suggesting for your dogs. These are all topical treatments that can be safely and effectively used for various common issues.

1. Visine for Dog Eye Infections

First on my list is Visine, specifically for dog eye infections. The anti-inflammatory ingredient, tetrahydralazine, has proven to be effective for dogs with conjunctivitis or red eyes. You can administer one to two drops into your dog’s lower eyelid three to four times a day for five to seven days.

2. Polysporin with Pain Relief

Next, we have Polysporin with pain relief, which contains lidocaine. This is an excellent option for treating cuts on your dog. It not only acts as an antibacterial agent but also provides pain relief due to the lidocaine. I recommend applying it topically twice a day for seven to ten days.

3. 1% Hydrocortisone for Itchy Skin

1% Hydrocortisone cream is a must-have for dogs with acute areas of red, itchy skin. It helps decrease inflammation and can be applied to the affected skin twice a day for seven to fourteen days. This cream is also useful for insect bites or persistent licking areas.

4. Preparation H for Hemorrhoids and Wounds

Preparation H is primarily used to reduce inflammation and shrink blood vessels. It’s incredibly effective for healing wounds on dogs’ paws or for treating anal gland issues. Applying it topically twice a day for about two weeks can yield significant healing results.

5. Canesten (Clotrimazole) for Antifungal Treatment

Canesten, with the active ingredient clotrimazole, is a fantastic antifungal option. It’s especially effective for treating yeast ear infections and can be applied twice a day for five to ten days. This medication can also be used for yeast infections in other areas, such as the armpits or paws.

6. Polysporin Ear Drops for Ear Infections

For ear infections not caused by yeast, Polysporin ear drops are a great option. They contain antibacterial agents and can be used alongside Canesten for comprehensive treatment. Administer one to two drops in your dog’s ear twice daily for five to ten days.

7. Tissue Glue for Minor Wounds

Lastly, tissue glue is an excellent addition to your first aid kit. It’s perfect for minor wounds, especially on the pads of your dog’s feet, which are prone to bleeding. Applying two to four drops directly to the wound and holding the edges together can quickly stop the bleeding and promote healing.
