Dr. Jones’ #1 Natural Remedy for Dogs and Cats (and Humans Too!)

Dr. Jones’ #1 Inexpensive Remedy—Honey
With so many remedies out there, it can get overwhelming. What do you use first? Is it even safe? And what’s the right dose? Take, for example, a dog with a urinary tract infection (UTI).
I’ve found that starting with honey is often the easiest and most effective multipurpose remedy.
At the same time, for dogs with recurring urinary issues, our new Urinary Support Chews are proving to be highly beneficial. Packed with cranberry and D-mannose, these chews work to promote urinary tract health.

Why Honey Is a True Wonder
Honey is not just a treat—it’s man’s oldest sweetener. It’s an excellent substitute for sugar in drinks and foods, and it has remarkable medicinal uses. Bees produce honey from flowers, and the type most commonly used by humans comes from the honeybee genus Apis. Other types of honey from different insects have distinctly different properties.
Bees create honey as a food source, using it for energy in cold weather or when fresh food is scarce. But honey is also packed with nutrients:
-
Sugars: glucose and fructose
-
Minerals: magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium, chlorine, sulfur, iron, phosphate
-
Vitamins: B1, B2, C, B6, B5, B3 (vary by quality)
-
Trace elements: copper, iodine, zinc
Honey also has natural anti-inflammatory effects, helping wounds heal faster. Its phytochemicals fight viruses, bacteria, and fungi, making it an excellent natural antiseptic.
Honey in Research and Practice
Raw honey contains resins found in propolis, or “bee glue,” which bees use to protect their hives. At the First International Symposium on Honey and Human Health (Sacramento, 2008), researchers found that different honey varieties contain beneficial bacteria (like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) that may explain many of its therapeutic properties.
Honey also supports:
-
Blood sugar control: Fructose-to-glucose ratio fuels the liver efficiently, improving insulin sensitivity.
-
Cough suppression: More effective than dextromethorphan in children ages 2–18.
-
Immunity: Studies in Israel showed honey reduced febrile neutropenia in 64% of patients.
-
Wound healing: Honey promotes rapid healing for burns, cuts, and ulcers.
One Indian study compared honey to conventional burn treatment. After a week, 91% of honey-treated burns were infection-free versus only 7% in the conventional group.
How Honey Works
Honey is mostly glucose and fructose, which attract water, keeping wounds dry and preventing bacterial growth. Raw honey also contains glucose oxidase, which produces hydrogen peroxide—a mild antiseptic. Antioxidants and flavonoids, especially pinocembrin, add antibacterial effects. Darker honeys, like buckwheat, sage, and tupelo, contain more antioxidants, and raw, unprocessed honey is the most potent.
Choosing the Right Honey
Select locally grown, raw, and unpasteurized honey. Look for darker “honeydew” varieties at your natural health store or farmers market.
Honey has a multitude of veterinary uses:
-
Wound healing
-
Respiratory support (kennel cough, flu)
-
Allergies
-
Digestion
-
Eye infections
-
Urinary tract infections
How to Use Honey
For Wounds:
Apply honey directly to cuts, scrapes, or abscesses and cover with a bandage. Honey speeds up healing and reduces infection risk.
Natural Cough Syrup:
Mix:
-
2 tbsp honey
-
1 tsp lemon juice
-
½ cup water
Optional: Slippery Elm at 400mg/20lbs
Give twice daily.
Allergies:
Local honey contains tiny amounts of pollen, helping pets build tolerance over time. Dose: 1 tsp per 10 lbs daily for 60 days.
Digestion Aid:
Mix honey and apple cider vinegar in equal parts, dilute with water—helps digestion and eases joint inflammation.
Eye Infections:
Dissolve honey in warm water as a gentle eyewash.
Urinary Tract Infections:
Honey fights common UTI pathogens. Dose: 1 tsp per 20 lbs, twice a day for 7–10 days.
Sleep Aid for Pet Owners:
A mug of hot milk with a spoon of honey acts as a mild sedative, supporting relaxation and sleep.
