9 Lesser-Known Kitchen Remedies for Dogs and Cats

Welcome back to my kitchen! Today, I’m going to share some lesser-known kitchen remedies that you might already have sitting in your pantry, ready to help your dog or cat’s health. We’ve talked about some kitchen fixes before, but today, I’m bringing you new tips that could make a big difference in your pet’s wellbeing. Let’s dive right in!

1. Garlic – A Hidden Superpower

Let’s start with something simple: garlic. It’s not just for adding flavor to your meals—it’s packed with health benefits too! Garlic is a powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and even antiviral agent. It’s especially useful for dogs, helping to keep fleas at bay.

Now, don’t overdo it! Garlic is safe in moderate amounts. I recommend about a quarter of a clove per 20 pounds of body weight daily. You can crush it and mix it into your dog’s food, or use garlic powder (about an eighth of a teaspoon per 20 pounds). Garlic can also help with infections or wounds that just won’t heal, making it a handy kitchen ally.

2. Chamomile Tea – Soothing Relief

Next up, chamomile tea. It’s a great, gentle option for calming your pet’s tummy or anxiety. Both dogs and cats can benefit from it, and it’s also fantastic for eye infections. I use it myself when my pets need a little relief.

To use, steep a chamomile tea bag in hot water, let it cool for 15 minutes, then serve about a quarter cup per 20 pounds of body weight once or twice a day. Chamomile is so gentle that it’s practically impossible to overdose on it. For eye infections, just apply 2–4 drops of concentrated chamomile tea to the affected eye a few times a day.

3. Vinegar – A Powerful Antifungal

White vinegar—especially apple cider vinegar—does more than just clean your kitchen! It’s a fantastic antifungal, and it works wonders for ear infections in dogs. It can target yeast and tough bacteria like Pseudomonas, which many antibiotics fail to address.

To use it, mix 25% vinegar with warm water (about 3 tablespoons of vinegar to 9 tablespoons of water). Using a syringe, apply a few drops of this mixture into your dog’s ear and gently massage the base. Repeat this twice a day for 5-7 days, and you’ll likely see improvement.

4. Green Tea – Antioxidant Powerhouse

Green tea is more than just a beverage for humans; it’s full of antioxidants that can benefit your pets too. It’s antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral—perfect for supporting overall health and even reducing the size of fatty tumors in pets.

For urinary tract infections or minor bladder issues, brew a cup of green tea, let it cool for about 20 minutes, then give your dog about one tablespoon of the tea per 20 pounds of body weight twice a day for 10-14 days. Green tea can also help prevent cancer due to its powerful antioxidants.

5. Flax Oil – Healthy Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Flax oil is an inexpensive source of omega-3 fatty acids and is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. If your pet has allergies or skin issues, adding flax oil to their diet can work wonders for their coat and overall skin health.

For the right dose, give your pet about a quarter teaspoon of flax oil per 10 pounds of body weight twice daily. This will help reduce itching and improve the health of their coat.

6. White Sugar – Wound Healing Aid

Here’s a surprising one: white sugar. It might seem counterintuitive, but sugar actually helps speed up wound healing, especially for larger, open wounds that just won’t close. In veterinary practice, we often use sugar to help wounds heal more quickly and prevent infection.

To use, lightly sprinkle sugar on the wound, then cover it with a nonstick wrap. Change the bandage twice a day, and you should see faster healing as the sugar helps draw out excess fluid and keeps bacteria at bay.

7. White Rice – Diarrhea Remedy

Rice has been a go-to remedy for diarrhea in pets for ages. It works by absorbing excess fluid, which helps firm up stool and resolve diarrhea faster. This is especially useful if your pet is dehydrated or has lost electrolytes due to frequent bowel movements.

If your pet has diarrhea, start by fasting them for 12 hours while ensuring they have water. Then, give them a small portion of cooked white rice twice daily. For a 20-pound dog, start with about half a cup of rice. You can mix it with some broth to make it more appetizing. Within a couple of days, you should see improvement.

8. Parsley – Digestive Support and More

Don’t overlook parsley! It’s a powerful herb that helps with digestive upset in pets. It contains essential oils that help relax the muscles of the intestinal tract, reducing bloating and easing digestive discomfort. It also promotes bile production, which helps break down fats.

For digestive issues or bloating, give your pet about one teaspoon of parsley per 10 pounds of body weight twice daily. It’s a simple, natural way to support digestion and ease discomfort.

9. Sunflower Oil – Skin Care Remedy

Last but not least, sunflower oil. This oil is rich in ceramides, which are essential fats that help maintain a strong skin barrier. It’s especially useful for pets with allergies or dry, irritated skin.

To use, apply about a quarter to half teaspoon of sunflower oil to your pet’s skin, focusing on areas like the neck, shoulders, back, and tail base. Do this once a day for 14 days, and you should notice a reduction in itching and an improvement in skin health.
