What Is Vaseline?

Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly, is a semi-solid product made from purified hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. The medical-grade form we use on pets is refined, safe, and free of harmful components. It’s inert, which means it doesn’t react with other ingredients, and it’s not absorbed through the skin or intestinal tract.

Because of this, petroleum jelly is widely used as a base in creams and ointments. It forms an excellent barrier while remaining safe if consumed in small amounts.

Hundreds of studies show that petroleum jelly:

  • Does not get absorbed into the skin or body

  • Forms an effective skin barrier

  • Seals in moisture, creating an ideal wound-healing environment

In dermatology literature, petroleum jelly is considered the gold standard for occlusive barriers—everything else is compared to it.

How Vaseline Benefits Pets

1. Limits Moisture Loss

It helps prevent transepidermal moisture loss, keeping skin hydrated and healthy.

2. Supports Skin Barrier Repair

If your pet has a cut, scrape, or allergy, Vaseline helps repair the skin barrier.

3. Moisturizes Injured or Dry Skin

It keeps dry or damaged skin soft and protected while it heals.

My Experience: Wound Healing

I use Vaseline regularly for wound care, even post-surgical wounds. The three main benefits I see are:

  1. Keeps the wound moist

  2. Prevents scabbing

  3. Speeds up re-epithelialization (surface skin cell growth)

For example, I ran into a door a week ago and had a small gash. After cleaning it with antiseptic and using tissue glue to close it, I applied Vaseline twice a day. Within five days, the wound was healing beautifully.

The same principle applies to pets. If Cassian had a small ear tip cut, I’d apply Vaseline twice a day. Even if he licked it, it’s inert and passes harmlessly through the digestive tract.

Common Uses in Pets

1. Cracked Pads and Dry Noses

Dogs often have dry or cracked paw pads and noses. Applying Vaseline forms a protective barrier that locks in moisture. Often, within 24 hours, cracked pads are much improved.

2. Hairballs in Cats

Vaseline acts as a mild laxative and lubricant for cats with hairballs. A small amount coats the hair in the digestive tract, helping it move through safely. Typically, a quarter teaspoon twice a day for three days works well.

Safety Precautions

  • Large or infected wounds: Clean and disinfect first. Don’t trap bacteria under Vaseline.

  • Apply sparingly: Only a thin layer is needed to form an effective barrier.

  • Use pure medical-grade Vaseline: Avoid flavored or additive-laden products.

  • Monitor wounds: If a wound worsens, remove Vaseline and consult your veterinarian.

Natural Alternatives

There are natural options, though they’re not quite as effective at forming a barrier:

  • Castor oil: Good for topical use or as a mild laxative.

  • Aloe vera: Effective for wound care but less occlusive.

  • Coconut oil: Antibacterial, good for dental and skin care, but absorbed more and doesn’t protect as well.

Even though Vaseline isn’t natural, it’s a safe, cost-effective, and highly effective home remedy that works for many pets.

Why I Recommend It

I’m all about home remedies that are safe, accessible, and effective. Vaseline ticks all those boxes. It’s inexpensive, widely available, and works reliably for wound care, dry skin, cracked pads, and hairballs.

I’m not sponsored by Vaseline—I’m sponsored by real results that help pets heal safely at home.

Takeaways

Vaseline is:

  • Safe when used correctly

  • Excellent for wound healing

  • Great for dry skin and cracked pads

  • Useful as a mild laxative for hairballs

When in doubt, always monitor your pet and consult your veterinarian. But in most cases, Vaseline is a practical, safe, and effective solution that many pet owners overlook.
