Stop Itching Caused by Yeast: Top 3 Steps
If your dog has an underlying allergy and the itching is getting worse, then he may have a secondary yeast infection. Dr Jones shows you his top 3 steps to treating yeast at home and preventing it from coming back.
You can commonly find secondary yeast growth in the armpit areas, as well as the groin area.
So, when should you suspect secondary yeast?
- If your allergic dog has greasier skin than normal
- Or is less responsive to treatment
Their skin will have a blackened and reddish look to it.
So, how can you treat this?
Step 1: Shampoo – twice weekly minimum with an anti-yeast Selenium Sulfide shampoo, such as from the brand Selsun Blue. This will get rid of the greasiness, some of which is feeding the yeast! Lather and leave on for a minimum of 10 mins, and rinsing well. You’ll do this for two weeks.
Step 2: Topical – this spray is a natural anti – yeast spray that you can make at home.
Recipe:
- Green Tea: 1/2 cup
- Apple Cider Vinegar: 2 Tbsp
- Lavender Oil: 10 drops
Add to a spray bottle, shake well and focus spray on crevices on the body, such as armpits, groin, skin folds, and paws.
Step 3: Internal Remedies – Garlic and Apple Cider Vinegar are two excellent additions to your pets diet in order to help with yeast infections.
Garlic in appropriate doses is very safe for our dogs, and you can give 1/4 clove per 10-20 lbs daily. You can mince into your pets food.
For the Apple Cider Vinegar, a standard dog dose is about 1 tsp per 20lbs of body weight. You can dilute into their water and you can add some honey as well.

I wanted to thank you for this information. I have been dealing with a nightmare of allergies and a nasty cycle of antibiotics with a recurring yeast infection. My poor GSD has had it hard since October. When we started a journey of getting to the root of the problem instead of masking it with medication, I have been learning a lot, but it’s truly out of desperation. My dog, Nitro, is not 2 years old. I know it has been a combination of vaccine injury and kibble food that has caused this, with, of course, antibiotics.
Well, I wish I knew this two years ago. I’m gonna try the first two steps but the garlic is something that I think may have made him sick to his stomach when he ate chicken a couple years ago. I really don’t want to try that again. Also, he will not drink his water with the vinegar. I tried that. Let me try some honey with it. Thank you
