7 Safe and Effective Kitchen Remedies for Cats
As a pet parent, you’ll want the best for your cat when it comes to their health and well-being. Many of the remedies that can help our pets are already in our kitchens. Let me share some of my favorite and most effective kitchen remedies for cats that you can easily use to help with common issues like skin infections, hairballs, and even urinary tract infections.
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a favorite in my household because of its many health benefits. Not only is it great for skin health—acting as an antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral agent—but it’s also fantastic for treating skin infections and allergies. If your cat suffers from bad breath, coconut oil can even help improve dental health when rubbed on their gums. It’s packed with MCT oil, which can be beneficial for cats with seizures by offering an alternative energy source to the brain. I’ve also found that it can help with hairballs. Try giving your cat 1/2 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight twice daily to keep things moving smoothly.
2. Honey
Unpasteurized honey is a go-to remedy for many health issues, including wound care and allergies. Its natural antibacterial properties are especially useful for treating antibiotic-resistant bacteria and even UTIs. Honey is incredibly effective for wound healing—just apply it topically twice a day, and you’ll notice faster recovery times. It’s also a fantastic natural remedy for coughing in cats.

5. Sunflower Oil – Skin Care Remedy

I recommend finely chopping parsley and mixing it into your cat’s food—1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, twice daily.

While not technically a kitchen staple for most, I always keep slippery elm in my pantry. It’s a natural remedy that works wonders for upset stomachs, vomiting, or diarrhea in cats. It’s particularly beneficial for cats with kidney disease because it helps with nausea. Slippery elm is also useful for treating Feline Urinary Tract Disease and chronic coughs, including asthma. I typically give my cats one 400mg capsule per day by opening the capsule and mixing it into their food.
