Pet Food: Is It Safe? Shocking Truths & Safe Diet Tips

This week on Veterinary Secrets, I want to share the three keys to making sure your pet’s food is both safe and nutritious. Many common diseases in dogs and cats—like allergies, arthritis, and even cancer—can be traced back to one major culprit: food. Nutrition is the foundation of health. If you eat healthier, you’re healthier. The same holds true for our pets.

Let’s dive into the three keys to feeding your dog or cat the right way.

Key #1: Look at the Ingredients

The top three ingredients usually make up 80% or more of a dry pet food’s formula. Take a look at the bags in the store—you’ll often see something like ground yellow corn listed first. That’s not ideal.

What should be first? An animal-based protein. Dogs and cats need protein, not carbohydrates, as their main ingredient. Healthier carbs like sweet potato, potato, and brown rice are okay for dogs, but for cats, ideally, you should avoid carbs altogether.

Key #2: Avoid Chemical Preservatives, Artificial Flavors, and Colors

Many commercial pet foods contain toxic additives. Here’s what to watch out for:

  • Chemical preservatives: BHA, BHT, propylene glycol, and quin. Instead, look for natural preservatives like vitamin E (tocopherols) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

  • Artificial flavor enhancers: Avoid things like phosphoric acid.

  • Artificial colors: AVOID additives like AO, AOD, and sodium nitrate.

These chemicals can contribute to long-term health problems, so always check the labels.

Key #3: Boost Nutrition with Simple Additions

Most of us feed our pets kibble—but you can dramatically improve their nutrition with a few simple, inexpensive additions from your own kitchen. Here’s what I do for my pets:

  1. Protein from table scraps: Cooked chicken, turkey, or beef can be added to their kibble. Just make sure it’s plain—no seasoning or sauces.

  2. Yogurt: Plain yogurt (3–4% fat) is a great source of probiotics. I usually add 1–2 tablespoons a few times a week.

  3. Flax oil: Especially useful when skin flares up. It’s inexpensive and adds healthy fats and omega-3s.

  4. Fruits and vegetables: Small bits of apple, carrot, or other safe fruits and veggies are not only nutritious but can also help clean teeth.

  5. Eggs: Scrambled or fried eggs make an excellent protein boost for dogs and cats alike.

With just these five simple additions, you can greatly improve the nutritional value of your pet’s diet.

The Takeaway

Feeding your pet healthy, safe food doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Focus on quality ingredients, avoid harmful chemicals, and add a few simple supplements from your kitchen.

  1. Hi Dr. Jones,
The problem with Kibble (regardless of what is in it which is suspect!) Is the OVER PROCESSING.
Kibble & commercial pet food is cooked more than once at very HIGH temperatures which DESTROYS essential enzymes, nutrients and vitamins!
If people feed commercial diets they should also be adding finely ground up mostly green veggies, blueberries etc. (or VERY lightly steamed ) They need the minerals and enzymes.
Most people AND dogs are way healthier on raw diets. Wolves are omnivores who go for the undigested GREEN in their preys gut for the nutrients contained in the veggie matter.
Cooking food over 118 degrees destroys essential nutrients and enzymes. True for doGs and people.
Your right about nutrition being key to good health.
Processed (unregulated) commercial pet food is junk.
I also don’t think dogs need to have 80% protein to be healthy.
My dog is 70% veggies and is SUPER healthy.
