Understanding and Treating Ear Mites in Dogs and Cats

If your dog or cat is scratching their ears, you might be wondering if they have ear mites. In this article, I’ll guide you through understanding what ear mites are, diagnosing the infection in your pet, and using effective holistic remedies to treat ear mites at home.

What Are Ear Mites?

Ear mites, scientifically known as Otodectes cynotis, are a common parasite affecting dogs and cats, particularly cats. They live in the ear canal and, unlike other parasites, they do not burrow into the ear but remain on its surface. An ear mite infection can be identified by symptoms like itching, head shaking, and scratching of the ears, but a distinguishing sign is the presence of thick black debris. Importantly, most pets with itchy or infected ears do not have ear mites, so accurate diagnosis is essential before starting any treatment.

The Life Cycle and Spread of Ear Mites

Ear mites have a life cycle of about three weeks, during which the female lays eggs that continue the infestation. These mites are highly contagious and spread easily from one animal to another through direct contact, which is why it’s vital to isolate affected pets from others during treatment.

Diagnosing Ear Mites

Given that ear mites are often mistaken for bacterial or yeast infections, a proper diagnosis is crucial. Observing the black debris in the ear and having your vet confirm the presence of mites will help ensure that the treatment addresses the right problem.

Conventional Treatments for Ear Mites

The simplest and quickest treatment involves a visit to your veterinarian for a topical anti-parasitic medication. One effective option is Revolution (Selamectin), applied between the shoulder blades and lasting for about a month. Other topical treatments, such as Acarexx (ivermectin) and Milbemite (milbemycin oxime), can also effectively eliminate mites.

Holistic Remedies for Treating Ear Mites

For those interested in natural treatments, several holistic remedies can soothe your pet’s ears and help eradicate the mites.

  1. Olive Oil and Vitamin E Ear Cleanser

    • If your pet’s ears are particularly sore, start with a gentle oil cleanse. Mix one tablespoon of olive oil with a capsule of Vitamin E. Place the solution in the ear, let it sit for 5 minutes, then massage the ear’s base, and remove debris with a cotton swab. This treatment can help soothe and prepare the ears for further remedies.
  2. Vinegar Solution

    • For pets without red, irritated ears or open wounds, a vinegar solution can be helpful. Mix equal parts water and vinegar, and apply about a teaspoon to each ear. Massage it in, then wipe out the excess liquid and debris with a cotton swab. This can be repeated daily for a week, followed by a week off, and repeated as needed.
  3. Garlic and Olive Oil

    • Garlic has natural anti-mite properties. Soak a crushed garlic clove overnight in warm olive oil, discard the clove, warm the oil, and apply five drops to each ear once daily for 21 days.
  4. Soothing Herbs: Aloe and Calendula

    • Aloe and calendula essential oils are also effective and gentle on the ears. Available at natural health stores, these oils can be applied daily for 21 days to help soothe and clean the affected ears.

  2. When we had a new mother killed by a rattler, we hand fed her 10 new puppies calf starter. Then we found good homes for all 10 healthy puppies. It is available in ranch supply stores.

  3. Hi, we live in South Carolina (USA) and every summer my cat scratches her ears to blood.

We took her to the vet twice and they both said it was nothing they knew of (mites, etc…)

My guess is that she is that she gets mosquito bites then scratches them because they are itchy. I am saying that because she loves warm weather and when it gets hot, she spends all day long outside.

Did you hear about anything like that?
    Thanks
