Homemade Valentine’s Day Treats for Your Dog and Cat
By Dr. Andrew Jones

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and while you can’t share your chocolate with your dog or cat, I’ve got two awesome homemade, yummy pet Valentine’s treats for them! First, I’ll show you the dog recipe, followed by the cat recipe at the two-minute mark. Let’s get started!

Healthy Grain-Free Dog Treats

Our grain-free, healthy dog treat has five simple ingredients:

  1. Ground turkey (grain-free)
  2. Coconut flour
  3. Eggs
  4. Canned pumpkin
  5. Chicken broth (or my preferred choice: Ultimate Canine Broth)

Step 1: Cook the Ground Turkey

First, we need at least half a pound of cooked ground turkey. Once it’s cooked, let’s move on to blending.

Step 2: Blend the Ingredients

Add about half a cup of the cooked ground turkey to a food processor. Blend in:

  • 4 tablespoons of canned pumpkin
  • 2 scoops of Ultimate Canine broth (or ¼ cup of water and ¼ cup of chicken broth)
  • 1 egg

Fully blend the cooked turkey, pumpkin, and broth until smooth.

Step 3: Add Coconut Flour

Now, incorporate 1 cup of coconut flour into the blended turkey mix. The dough should form a ball—firm enough to hold together but not so sticky that it sticks to your hands. When working with coconut flour, be gentle since it’s quite different from wheat flour.

Step 4: Roll and Shape

Roll out the dough on parchment paper. I used a heart-shaped cookie cutter to give it that Valentine’s feel. You may find it easier to work with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Step 5: Bake

Place the cookies on a baking sheet and bake them in the oven for 30 minutes at 350°F.

Step 6: The Taste Test

Once the cookies are out of the oven, they look and smell delicious. Now, the moment of truth: Will my dog Tula eat them? Success! She loves them.

I did notice that working with just coconut flour was a bit tricky since it doesn’t contain gluten, which helps things stick together. Next time, I’ll use 50% wheat flour and 50% coconut flour for a smoother dough.

Yummy Homemade Carb-Free Cat Valentine’s Day Treats

Now, let’s move on to our cat treat recipe. For these carb-free treats, you’ll need the following:

  1. Ground turkey
  2. Chicken broth (or Ultimate Feline broth)
  3. Canned pumpkin
  4. All-natural gelatin (to make the treats stick together)

Step 1: Blend the Ingredients

Start by adding ½ cup of cooked ground turkey to the food processor. Then, add:

  • 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin
  • 2 scoops of Ultimate Feline broth
  • ¾ cup of water (or ¾ cup of chicken broth)

Next, dissolve 1 package of gelatin in the broth and add it to the turkey and pumpkin mixture.

Step 2: Form and Chill

Pour the blended mixture into small individual molds—I used paw-shaped trays for extra fun! Let the treats set in the fridge for about an hour.

Step 3: Serve

After about 30 minutes, I took the treats out of the fridge. They looked great! These treats were so much easier than baking cookies.

Although I don’t have a cat to try them, Tula loved them just as much as the dog treats.

Important: Since these treats contain meat, it’s best to store them in the freezer.
