Thank you for the good information in the “kidney disease” videos. My questions are about dental procedures for senior cats with kidney disease. My 14 year old cat has stage 2 kidney disease. He currently has gingivitis, gum recession around front canine and a history of forls. He had one dental cleaning and a few teeth pulled in 2016. The only dental care I can manage is to get an oral care tooth gel somewhere in his mouth each night. I live alone and would need a second person to manage a spray etc. as he’s not cooperative with me. I am putting colloidal silver in one water bowl. He’s on EFAs.
Two questions:
First, are there statistics about outcomes from dental cleanings for senior cats in any- stage kidney disease? I’ve heard some scary stories about senior cats with kidney disease plummeting a few weeks after a dental procedure (extractions and cleaning).
Second, if it becomes a quality of life issue (we’re not there yet) and I decide to go forward with a dental procedure, would you list what pre-tests are necessary. Of course, I’d want as few invasive procedures as possible without compromising his care while under anesthesia. I did get some quotes from a few vets and the price differs quite a bit because of the number of tests each recommended. For instance, we know he has kidney disease, is a urine test necessary? What might they do differently if they have urine test results? Cost is not the issue; I’m just concerned about subjecting him to unnecessary invasive procedures.
Any guidance you can give is deeply appreciated as I wrestle with this decision.
