Best Natural Painkillers for Dogs and Cats

Many of you reading this are going to have a dog or cat who has been on an NSAID – Non Steroidal Anti inflammatory Drug.

Yes they can be effective for acute pain relief…

But they can also have some serious side effects, and should be avoided long term… and NEVER given to cats long term.

Here are a few documented NSAID side effects…  (and this comes from the FDA): www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/product-safety-information/veterinary-non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs-nsaids

Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, not eating/eating less, and lethargy. If your pet experiences any of these potential side effects, STOP administering the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Veterinary NSAIDS may be associated with gastrointestinal ulcers/perforations, liver, and kidney toxicity.

Serious side effects associated with the use of NSAIDs can occur with or without warning and, in some cases, result in death. Use with other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as other NSAIDs and corticosteroids, should be avoided.

Patients at greatest risk for kidney problems are those that are dehydrated, are on diuretic treatment, or have pre-existing kidney, heart, and/or liver problems. NSAIDs can cause stomach or intestinal bleeding.

Just to name a few signs.

What CAN you do?

Well as an alternative option, you should consider trying our NEW 95% Curcumin Supplement, Dr. Jones’ Ultimate High Absorption 95% Curcumin for Dogs and Cats

Effective Natural Pain Relief for Dogs and Cats

  1. GINGER– Ginger extract may help with joint and muscle pain because it contains phytochemicals, which help stop inflammation. Few side effects have been linked to ginger when taken in small doses. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea or grated into vegetable juice
  2. DMSO – Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an organosulfur compound- it is a colorless liquid. It penetrates the skin very readily. It can be used as a single agent. And example would be treating your dog or cat with knee swelling and arthritis. DMSO can be applied topically to the affected joint – typically twice daily. A holistic option is to use a topical pain cream such as Arnica gel/Traumeel/CBD oil and combine it with DMSO. Apply twice daily.
  3. ESSENTIAL OILS – Frankincense (Boswellia) and Almond Oil. Dilute with olive/coconut/almond oil and apply topically to affected areas. Has shown to be very helpful for dogs.
  4. HEAT/COLD THERAPY – Decreasing blood flow in an initial injury is VERY important, and one of THE BEST ways to provide pain relief. When I initially tore my Achilles Tendon, this was MOST effective. Once the initial swelling/pain has subsided, then go to HEAT. Increasing blood flow with heat can make a dramatic difference. Increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to where it’s needed, decreasing pain. Heating Pads and Heated Braces are great options.
  5. EFA’s –  Essential Fatty Acids. Flax, Fish or Krill. Important to have therapeutic levels. A dog flax dose is 1 teaspoon/10lbs body weight once-twice daily, Fish oil dose of 1000mg/10lbs, Krill oil of 1000mg/50lbs
  6. CASTOR OIL – Studies have shown that when castor oil is applied topically, it reduces inflammation and relieves pain. One study demonstrated that treatment with a gel containing ricinoleic acid led to a significant reduction in pain and inflammation when applied to the skin, compared to other treatment methods
  7. ARNICA 30C – This option is of the base homeopathic remedy which is a great relief for acute injury, muscle pain & stiffness, swelling from injuries. The dosage is 1 capsule per 10lbs of body weight every 2-4 hours for acute injury and 1 capsule per day for long term use. This remedy is not difficult to administer. You can just put the capsule under your dog’s lips and have him slowly absorb and/or swallow it. I have used the combination homeopathic cream TRAUMEEL and found it to be very helpful.
  8. CBD or Cannabidiol – This is the non psychoactive medicinal part of the cannabis plant which has research showing it to be a VERY effective Natural Anti-inflammatory. It is working well for Arthritis, pain relief, Auto-immune disease, including Allergies. Dose is 3mg/10lbs of body weight once to twice daily. Dr Jones’ CBD for Dogs and Cats [https://drjonesnaturalpet.com/supplements/dr-jones-ultimate-cbd-oil.html]is an awesome option!
  9. BOSWELLIA – Boswellia is an herb traditionally used in India to treat arthritis and help boost the immune system. It’s also known as Frankincense and also used to treat other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and heart disease. To get sufficient anti-inflammatory benefit, we are looking at the dose of 10-20mg per 10lbs of body weight per day.
  10. 95% CURCUMIN – Curcumin has been extensively studied for Arthritis/natural pain relief.

Consider this Study: Curcumin May Help Ease Symptoms of Osteoarthritis… thanks to its potent anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin may be a safe and effective long-term treatment option for people with osteoarthritis (OA). At least, that was the conclusion of the authors of a recent review of the clinical use of curcumin for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

The review was first published online in August 2021 as part of the Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology book series.

One study found that 95% Curcumin in combination with Boswellia was as effective as Naproxen (in people) for providing pain relief. Standard curcumin dose is 500mg/50lbs daily, BUT for our High absorption 95% curcumin it is 250mg/50lbs daily
