Hey everyone, it’s Dr. Andrew Jones. I wanted to share a little update on my old buddy Jesse—my 18-year-old dog who’s been with me through thick and thin. Over the years, Jesse’s faced spinal degeneration, arthritis, cataracts, and the usual lumps and bumps that come with age. Despite it all, he’s still here, enjoying his walks, meals, and cuddles, reminding me every day what it means to care for a senior dog.
Of course, caring for an older dog isn’t always easy. The ups and downs in his appetite and mobility are real, emotional, and humbling. But through it all, my focus is keeping him comfortable, pain-free, and happy for as long as possible.

About My Old Dog, Jesse: Health Update and Reflections
Hey everyone, it’s Dr. Andrew Jones. I wanted to give you a quick update on my dog Jesse. Jesse’s been a part of my life for a long time, and like many senior dogs, he’s facing some serious health challenges—but he’s still hanging in there.
Jesse’s Health Conditions
Jesse is 18 years old and, naturally, he has a few age-related issues:

Spinal degeneration: He has a general myopathy affecting his whole back end.

Arthritis: His knees and hips are affected, making movement a bit stiff.
-
Vertebral fusion: Especially in his lower back.
-
Sensory decline: His hearing is down to less than 10% of normal, and cataracts have affected his vision.
-
Lumps and bumps: Common for an 18-year-old dog.
Up until last week, Jesse was doing fairly well. He would stumble occasionally, but his appetite remained strong, he was drinking water regularly, and he was going on short walks three to four times a day.
Recent Health Changes
About a week ago, I noticed a sudden change. On Friday, Jesse hadn’t eaten or drunk much for two days. I was genuinely concerned. Thankfully, that evening, he perked up and started eating again. Over the weekend, he seemed stable, especially with the supplements and occasional pain medication I give him.
However, earlier this week, he started refusing food again. These ups and downs are part of caring for an older dog, and they remind me how fragile life can be—even after 18 long, happy years.
Reflections on Caring for Senior Pets
Even after caring for thousands of dogs and cats in my clinic, watching your own pet age is deeply emotional. It gives me a real sense of what pet owners experience when making tough decisions for their furry companions.
Right now, Jesse is being kept comfortable and pain-free. As long as he’s eating and drinking, I’ll continue to support him at home. If he reaches a point where he’s clearly uncomfortable and stops eating or drinking, that may be the time to make the hardest decision.

I just want to say that I am so sorry for what you are going through with Jessie. We are also going th rough some problems with our Wonder. He is a shepard/ blue healer mix a beautiful, wonderful n loving dog. We have had him for 13 or 14 years. I had to take him to the vet the other day. I was told that his kidneys are shutting down, and so they have him on and IV for the 3 days Friday will be the 3rd day. He is hoping it will flush out the toxins that are in his body.
If it works he said that he will be put on a strick diet. If it doesn’t I’m going to hate to hear what he is going to tell me. I hate it that I am having to go this alone, but my husband had to go to Alb. for his sister’s funeral; so I have no other chose. I don’t know if our other little dog understands that he was sick and where he is. I do think he is going to be very lonely without him here. Chancey is a beagle/jack russel mix.
I wish I could show you a picture of our Wonder but there isn’t a place to post a picture to you on this. All I can say is that we both have to be strong. I’ll be praying for Jessie hugs to you both.

Hi Cyn, thank you so much for sharing Wonder’s story. After 13 or 14 years together, he’s not just a dog—he’s family, and I know how incredibly hard it is when our old friends start to struggle.
Kidney disease in senior dogs can be challenging, but I’m glad Wonder is getting supportive care. Fluids (like the IV your vet is giving) are often used to help correct dehydration and support the kidneys by improving hydration and circulation. How he responds over these days will help guide the next steps. A kidney-friendly diet and ongoing support may help some dogs maintain a good quality of life.

I am so sorry. One of my 13 1/2 year old Labs is going through something like this. You are right. It doesn’t matter how long you have your pet. It’s never long enough and is always difficult to deal with. I just don’t know if I can do it when the time comes. Take care and know that others are thinking about you and understand.

I am so sorry that Jessie’s time is coming to an end. I know how u feel, its hard on us no matter how you have a pet (family) when it’s their time to go. Unfortunately you will be experiencing what the rest of us have to go through. I hope when his time comes you will be able to help him go to the Rainbow Bridge. I am glad to see that your taking such great care of him and doing everything you can to see he is comfortable and spending a lot of time with him. Showing your love to him and caring for him the way you do means a lot to him and his unconditional love to you does too. When his time does come for him to pass to heaven even though you will be heartbroken you’ll know you did your best you could do for him.

Jesse is very lucky to have you , I am nursing my adopted 14 year old Scottish Terrier with bladder cancer recently diagnosed , lucky enought it is in the higher area and not impairing her urinary tract, I am keeping her comfortable with piroxicam and adding but C on her diet . She is eating and drinking bu appetite not that great . I’m keeping her just like what you said , as long as she is eating and drinking and still a little bit active. God Bless you both.

My heart goes out to you and Jesse. I lost my beloved Yorkie, Sasha, in October 2014 after a three year battle with GME. She was on Cytarabine and Prednisone during that time, and had her ups and downs, but was basically doing quite well until . . . she stopped eating, drinking, started stumbling, trembling. Even though I knew it was coming, making that decision was heart wrenching, but I could not have her suffering, and my veterinarian and the vet. neurologist told me there was nothing more that could be done and that she was in pain. Each time you reach the end of the road with a pet – and mine are usually 15, 16, 17 years old – it is painful beyond measure.
Jesse knows you are there for him, and will help him in whatever way is necessary.

You and Jesse were blessed with 18 years together. I had and have tears watching the video of the 2 of you. When the time comes for Jesse to cross over the Rainbow Bridge he will be with lots of other pets that have gone before him. You will have to remember the good times as you try to heal. I have lost 3 of my furbabies since Dec.14 and it was horrible to have to say good bye. All were rescues and I loved them with all my heart.

You both are in my prayers. Having experienced the loss of my fourteen and a half year old Jazz Easter Sunday, I know their are no words of preparation, no expectation they will really be gone,no comfort for their loss…
The last six months were joyful times for all of us, we did our favorite things together, we had those conversations that were needed to be had,and towards the end I told her that time was different on the other side and if she need to go to that wonderful place,it would be a moment before we would be with her again…

Dear Andrew & Family,
My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time. I went through the same thing exactly one year ago this month. I am crying as I do this as I still miss my beautiful little girl. I have two other dogs which did help me get through it but my male dog Dallas fretted for her for 11 months. He is just starting to get back to normal. The other little girl Sasha was not as bad. Sasha knew how ill she was & slept beside her the whole night & would not move. It was amazing to watch this little dog laying so close that I had to keeping checking that she was not on top of Angel.
People who do not have pets have no idea what it is like to lose one of them as they become a member of the family. We kept Angel for as long as possible then came the time when she stopped eating & drinking & I knew it was kinder for her to let her go. It was heart breaking, but everyone tells me we did the right thing for her. We are in Australia & I was lucky to have a wonderful vet who cared for her until the end.
Just know that we are thinking of you & your family as it will be difficult for all.

thank you for sharing this video. I just lost my beloved cat of nearly 20 years, mr. kite, at the end of may. it is still difficult. the house just isn’t the same without him, despite the presence of my other pets. he was a fun and affectionate companion for so long and he gave so much to my life.

So sad to hear the latest news about Jesse. I have watched him in your videos and he is such a wonderful dog. We have gone thru the same terrible experience of loosing a beloved friend and cannot imagine how it will be when it happens again with our beloved Coco and Binky, my two mini schnauzers. Jesse couldn’t be in any better hands. Eighteen years, this is a loss for the whole family. We have always buried our pets near by and something our children participated in was preparing a Time Capsule to put with their beloved pet. A little story, a picture, a treat, maybe their favorite toy, their collar anything we could get in a jar, box or baggie. This helped them say good bye.

I have watched your videos for several years and always appreciated your down to earth attitude.
I saw the video last week about Jesse and as I had seen a few previous of him I appreciated the update and just saw this one this morning. At first I thought I wouldn’t be a great way to start the day, but again, I so appreciate your open attitude and realistic update.
Of course the tears came right away and I feel your pain. My son and I put our beloved Maggie, a Duck toller down 7 years, ago and to this day it’s hard to look at one, but I know she’s painfree and hoping she’s having the time of her life. I know you’re doing your very best for your friend. It is truly one of the most unselfish things we can do is being entrusted with the care of an animal. My heart is with you and you are not alone. Dearest Andrew, I lost my beloved “Katie-dog” the end of June after a 15 month battle with congestive heart failure. She was a small mixed breed and was 13 years old. Although it was an honor to accompany her and to assist her on the last part of her life’s journey, this time was also incredibly stressful and often depressing. I miss her terribly.
I am now needing to focus my attention on the fragile health of our 16-year-old chihuahua, challenged by kidney disease.

Hi, My thoughts are with you as I know how you feel. We lost our beautiful red setter earlier this year and it is terrible making that final decision. Your wonderful pet has had a lovely life with you and I am sure there are lots of happy memories to look back on .

I feel so bad for you and it is so hard to make that final decision for your best friend. When my best friend Rocky got lung cancer, the decision had to be made to put him out of his misery. He had a full life of fun and following me after I adopted him from his not very nice original family. After I made the decision to put him to sleep, I cried and drove my truck to a quiet area and missed my buddy. Drive your truck Doctor and remember Jessie and my Rocky and all the furry friends that are waiting for us in doggy heaven!!!

So sorry about Jessie. I feel so sad for him and for you.It is wonderful he has you to care for him.
I know how difficult it is to see them suffer and to loose them. I had to put my sweet little rescued Shih Tzu, Teeka down last Feb. That was so very heartbreaking and difficult and I am crying as I type this, I miss her so much. Thankfully I have my 10 yr old Molly (Cockapoo), she misses her little friend so much too. Molly has had had 2 surgeries since May, 2015. First one was to have bladder stones removed end of May (dear friends paid for that surgery) then she ruptured both cruciate ligaments in he left back knee on July 4th , had surgery July 21st, so she and I have had a rough summer. I have to carry her in and out of my house because of stairs
and no playing fetch, she lives for that and is so sad she can’t do that.
I am an elderly widow, my pets (now 1 pet) are are so very dear to me and this all has been difficult financially too.

I have a 16 year old little shih-tzu who has just started to show some of the same signs as your Jesse, and we are just taking each day at a time at the moment.
Times like this are never easy for pet owners but Jesse has the best dad in you, he is in the best hands.

I sympathize with you and sweet Jessie and fully understand what you’re going through…. G-d should bless Jessie with a full recovery – but actually he is already super-blessed to have you as his master! And you and your family – both two-and four legged – should all be blessed abundantly.

Dear Dr. Jones and Family, I’m sending prayers for you all and for Jesse. An animal communicator told me that animals don’t learn or gain anything from suffering (like we do), so the most loving thing is to let them go when it’s their time. What a dear old handsome dog. For a large dog to reach age 18 is wonderful, and he’s had a lively lovely life among your active happy family.
You will all miss him, I know, but I’m glad you’re not going to take Extraordinary Measures to try to prolong his life a few weeks. A quiet leavetaking surrounded by those he loves so faithfully … that’s what is most important. And that is most emphatically the right decision.
I am facing the same decision and hate to lose my beloved cat, but I cannot let her suffer while lingering just for my benefit. It is so hard to let them go. The only comfort after is the wonderful memories of their sweet good nature, and the unconditional love of our pets who remain.
It’s also a nurturing thing to have a family gathering, like a wake, for your dear dog. Each person can write or draw something that represents their own very significant interactions with Jesse. Later they can assemble a memory book, if they want.
Whenever I bury a pet, I write all their nicknames I use for them on their shroud, symbolizing my love and affection going with them into the great life circle. I often plant a tree or shrub over the grave. Holmes had a hydrangea, Amelia a tea olive, and Percy an apple tree. Each plant thrived, proving the Source of Life is neverending.
Many caring thoughts are with you, your family, and Jesse.

I am so sorry about Jessie. I lost my dog Jasper, she was a female. I loved her so dearly. She got sick. I thought she got a urinary infection and I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with lyme disease. She was given a shot; convinia and right after she developed seizures. It’s too much to go on. 3 months later she passed away. She was only 11 years old. I know what you are going through. I know the pain. There are no words that can describe it. My thoughts and my prayers are with both of you at this difficult time. Remember one thing, God is always by your side.

My daughter Andrea who works with your wife tells me you have another dog called Lewis. I have two dogs one of which was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. Is there anything you are doing to help Lewis now or after Jessie is gone? I know how you must feel holding Jessie and seeing her health go down. I am experiencing that with my Phoenix who is down at least 10 lbs in the last 2 months. My two dogs are very close and I know my Oscar will be lost with his Phoenix beside him. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

hi dr jones sorry to hear about jesse we know what you are going thru,as we have a 12 yr old g/s with d/m,heart problems,18 allergies & incontinence,as you are doing keeping jesse comfortable thats all we can do for rambo.some people say we should have him put down others share our thoughts do your best as long as he is not in pain, i am dreading when the time comes i will have to call my son to take him to the vets.we believe he is in the third stage of d/m as we have to walk him by holding his tail now. anyway rambo is unsettled so will take him for his last walk before bedtime. many thanks for all your advice i do pass it on to others & tell them to go on your site,thanks again,all the best jen london england

Dr. Jones, I am so sorry to hear Jessie’s story, but he does look comfortable in your lap. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. My old American Eskimo is 19 and 1/2 years old. He is going through some of the same things, and I know it is very tough for him too. I accredit his long life to your wonderful supplement that I am sure has kept him going this long. I want to give you a huge thank you for sharing all of the information that you do. My 15 year old, is just laying around. She is still eating and drinking but I know she is in pain. I am not a doctor but I know her. I don’t want to see her suffer so I have a call in to the last doctor who did thorough check on her when I took her for blood in her stools. That turned out to be nothing with the test that they had done. I know “we” as owners need to be there Gods. The job that I do not look for when I do get a companion. I was using your information when Jesse was younger. I just want to let you know I feel your pain.

i am really sad to here about Jessie,your loving partner.i have watched couple of dogs reaching the end of their lives.what we can do is to make them comfortable as possible and let them take their own time to bid goodbye! it is really cruel to terminate life just because some one is suffering. that is part of life.but if we care for them enough they can take it up bravely.and that is only thing they expect from us.’cos they know very well that they are reaching the end.but with our utmost care they can take it up bravely.thank you for sharing the news with us.
