7 OTC Human Medications Safe and Effective for Dogs

#1 Chlorhexidine: Topical Flush Wound Infections, Wound Cleaning and Wound Irrigation – this is a very effective over the counter antiseptic.

#2 Benadryl: Allergic Reactions, Hives, Itchy Skin – a standard dose is 1 mg/pound 2-3 times a day.

#3 Canesten/Clotrimazole: This is very effective for Ear Infection – squeeze a small amount into your dogs ear, then rub the base of their ear well to move the product down. Do this 2x/day, for 5-7 days.

#4 Hydrocortisone 1% Cream: For Itchy Skin and Ears – apply to affected areas 2-3 times a day. You can use this for Ear Infections – pair with Canesten to deal with the yeast, and the Hydrocortisone will help with the red, inflamed skin.

#5 Polysporin for Eyes/Polymyxin B & Gramicidin: This is for eye infections, Bacterial Conjunctivitis – Give 1-2 drops into your dogs affected eye 4 times a day for 5-7 days.

#6 Pepcid: Antacid for reducing acid production for Vomiting or Gastric Reflux. Standard dose is 2.5mg/10lbs of weight 2 times per day.

#7 Aspirin: Is a great pain reliever – there are a couple of cautions: if your dog is especially dehydrated, has an underlying organ dysfunction like liver and kidney disease, or if your dog is on another anti inflammatory such as Rimadil, they should not be taking Aspirin.

Short term use at the appropriate dose can be helpful! Dosage is: Regular strength, uncoated Aspirin, 325 mg/40lbs of bodyweight, 2x per day.
