Dog and Cat Warts: Natural Remedies That Actually Work
Your pet has this unsightly nodular lump.
It is probably a wart on their face.
And you might be wondering if there is anything you can do at home to help it go away.
The good news is yes. There are several remedies that work very well, including a few new ones I am excited to share.

What Exactly Is a Wart?
A wart is a fleshy, nodular lump.
I have had them on my hands and feet, and our animals get them too, especially dogs. They often show up around the face, eyelids, or mouth. Even very young dogs can develop them.

The underlying cause is a virus called the papilloma virus. I saw many cases of this in practice, and for years my advice was usually the same:
“There is not much we can do. It is not serious. Sometimes the immune system handles it.”
Turns out I was not completely correct.
There are remedies that help the body recognize and clear warts, and many of them are simple and safe.
Let us get into them.
Remedy One: Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is one of my favorite go-to remedies.
Vinegar is a strong antiviral and helps break down the fibrous tissue on the surface of a wart. This allows the immune system to recognize it and can even help kill the virus.
How to use it:
-
Soak a piece of gauze in apple cider vinegar.
-
Place the gauze over the wart.
-
Wrap it with vet wrap to keep it in place.
-
Do this once daily for 7 to 10 days.
After several days, the top of the wart usually turns dark and begins to break down. This is what we want. The ACV can now penetrate deeper and the immune system can respond.

A simple, inexpensive, gentle remedy.
Remedy Two: Concentrated Garlic Extract
Garlic is a well documented antiviral.
Warts are caused by a virus, so garlic makes perfect sense here.
A study from about ten years ago showed 96 percent of participants had complete wart removal using topical concentrated garlic. That is impressive.
I purchased a concentrated garlic extract where each capsule contains the equivalent of eight cloves of garlic.
How to use it:
-
Open the capsule.
-
Apply about half (or more) directly onto the wart.
-
Cover it to prevent your dog from licking.
-
Apply daily for 21 days.
If it is on an area your dog cannot reach, you can leave it uncovered.
Garlic works, and it works well.
Remedy Three: CBD Oil
Now for something newer.
CBD, also called cannabidiol, has many medicinal benefits. It is a strong anti-inflammatory, supports pain control, and has antibacterial and antiviral activity.

While I could not find one specific study on CBD and warts, several respected veterinary oncologists are now recommending CBD for papillomas. When specialists start suggesting something works, I pay attention.
How to use it:
-
Apply two or three drops of CBD directly on the wart twice daily.
-
Rub it in to help absorption.
-
Give CBD orally as well at 3 mg per 10 lbs of body weight twice daily.
-
Continue for 3 to 4 weeks.
Tula, who is just over twenty pounds, gets three drops.
It absorbs quickly and is very safe.
Remedy Four: Propolis (Bee Glue)
Propolis is one of my all-time favorite natural medicines.
Honeybees produce it to protect their hives. It helps control bacteria, viruses, and inflammation.
A study looking specifically at propolis for skin warts showed 75 percent of people had complete wart disappearance. That is a strong result.
How to use it:
-
Apply propolis liquid directly onto the wart twice daily.
-
Give oral propolis at 100 mg per 10 lbs of body weight daily.
-
Use it for 3 to 4 weeks.
It tastes sweet, is safe, and works well.
Tula and Cassian both get it regularly.
Remedy Five: L-Methionine or SAMe
This one surprises many people.
L-methionine is an amino acid, normally thought of as a building block for protein. But it also has medicinal value.
There are several reports of stubborn warts disappearing after using L-methionine for four weeks. One theory is that the sulfur content is toxic to the virus. Whatever the reason, it works and is very safe.
You can use either:
-
straight L-methionine capsules
-
SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine), which converts to methionine in the body
-
or my Liver Support Formula, which already contains SAMe
Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Liver Support Formula Soft Chews

How to use it:
-
Give 50 mg per 10 lbs of body weight once daily for 4 weeks.
For example, Tula at 20 lbs would get about a quarter of a 500 mg capsule.
This is a simple, safe option that offers real benefit.
Final Thoughts
If your pet has warts or papillomas, do not panic.
Try one of these remedies:
-
apple cider vinegar
-
concentrated garlic
-
CBD oil
-
propolis
-
L-methionine or SAMe
All of them have real potential to help warts shrink or disappear. And they are gentle, natural options that support the body instead of harming it.
