Using Licorice Root for Pet Allergies: A Natural Remedy That Works

A Powerful Herbal Remedy: Licorice Root for Dogs and Cats
I’m sure you remember the candy you used to get as a child, right? Well, this isn’t that sugary treat. This is a powerful herbal remedy that has worked wonders for dogs and cats.
Not too long ago, one of our beloved dogs, Jesse, started having serious allergies. He couldn’t stop licking his groin, especially at night. We tried just about every remedy I could think of, but nothing seemed to help. That was until I discovered Licorice Root.
Why Licorice Root Works for Pets
Licorice Root isn’t just another fad herb—it’s an effective natural treatment that I’ve seen make a huge difference in managing allergies. In Jesse’s case, it was the one thing that actually worked. The licking stopped, and he was finally getting some relief.
The Problem with Human Herbal Supplements
Now, here’s the issue: many of the herbal supplements made for humans contain alcohol as a base. While that might be fine for people, it’s definitely not suitable for our furry companions. Alcohol can be harmful to pets, so I always recommend finding alternatives that are safe and effective for them.

Licorice Root for Dogs and Cats: A Natural Remedy
Licorice Root, or glycyrrhiza glabra, is a plant native to regions like southern Europe, Egypt, China, and India. You may be surprised to learn that famous historical figures like King Tut, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon all used licorice for a variety of ailments. Napoleon reportedly ate so much of it that his teeth turned black from the juices! This herb has been a staple in both Chinese and Indian medicine for centuries, where it’s been used for everything from sore throats to gastrointestinal issues.
These days, while most people associate licorice with candies, it remains an incredibly useful natural remedy for pets. Here’s how licorice root can help improve the health of your dogs and cats.
Glycyrrhizin and Side Effects
Licorice root contains an active compound called glycyrrhizin, which is responsible for its sweetness—30 to 50 times sweeter than sugar. It’s often used in candies for its flavor. However, glycyrrhizin comes with some important side effects, which is why it’s important to use licorice carefully for your pet’s health.
Adverse effects include:
-
Heart failure
-
Heart disease
-
Fluid retention
-
High blood pressure
-
Diabetes
-
Kidney disease
-
Liver disease
I recommend not using licorice for more than 14 consecutive days and avoiding it if your pet is on medications like thiazide diuretics, cortisone, or cardiac glycosides. Licorice can extend the half-life of cortisone, so you’ll want to be careful when combining it with these treatments.
How to Use Licorice Root for Pets
Licorice root has a number of benefits for your pet, and I’ve found it effective in a few specific areas. Let’s go over the different ways you can incorporate it into your pet’s diet.
1. Allergies
Licorice root acts as a natural corticosteroid, helping with inflammation without suppressing the immune system like conventional steroids. It enhances the body’s anti-inflammatory processes, making it a great option to combine with conventional allergy treatments, like hydrocortisone.
Dosage:
-
1/2 ml of tincture per 20 lbs of body weight, twice daily for a maximum of 14 days.
2. Cough and Sore Throat Remedy
Licorice root is well-known for helping relieve coughs and sore throats. It works as an expectorant, loosening phlegm so it can be expelled. Plus, it soothes the mucous membranes in the throat.
Dosage:
-
1 ml of Licorice Root tincture
-
1 tbsp of dark honey
-
1 cup of green tea
Mix these ingredients and give 1/4 cup per 20 lbs of your pet’s weight twice daily for a cough.
3. Topical Anti-Itch Treatment
If your pet has itchy skin, a licorice root tincture mixed with coconut oil and lavender oil can provide soothing relief. It’s a great way to help manage skin irritations or ongoing itching.
Dosage:
-
1 ml of Licorice Root tincture
-
1 tbsp of coconut oil
-
5 drops of lavender oil
Apply the mixture topically to the affected area twice a day for 7 to 14 days.
4. Stomach Ulcers and Digestive Support
Licorice root has antibacterial properties that can help relieve stomach ulcers and support overall digestive health. It’s particularly helpful in soothing inflammation and irritation in the digestive tract.
In some countries, licorice root is approved to treat conditions like chronic gastritis, bloating, and gas. If you plan on using licorice root long-term, I recommend using Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Extract (DGL), which removes the glycyrrhizin to avoid side effects.
5. Anti-Inflammatory and Immune System Support
Licorice root has broad-spectrum antiviral activity and can be effective against viruses like herpes, HIV, hepatitis, SARS, and influenza. It’s also helpful for regulating an overactive immune system, making it a good option for autoimmune diseases like skin disorders.
Dosage and Administration
The key to using licorice root is getting the dosage right. Here are the recommended methods of administration:
Tincture:
-
Dose: 1/4 ml per 10 lbs of body weight, once or twice daily.
-
Most tinctures contain about 200 mg per 1 ml. Start with twice-daily dosing for allergies, for at least 3 days.
Tea:
-
Brew: 1 teaspoon of dried root per cup of water.
-
Dose: 1/4 cup of brewed tea per 10 lbs of your pet’s weight, daily.
Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Extract (DGL):
This extract contains no glycyrrhizin and is best used for chronic conditions like acid reflux.
Dosage: 0.1 grams per 10 lbs, three times daily, or in chewable tablet form.
My Thoughts on Licorice Root for Pets
I personally believe licorice root is a fantastic natural remedy that can help support your pet’s health, especially for managing allergies, coughing, skin issues, and digestive problems. I’ve seen great results with my own pets, and I’d definitely recommend considering it for yours.
P.S. I’ve found it especially useful for helping with itchy skin and coughs, and if you’re thinking of adding it to your pet’s natural healing routine, I say go for it!
