What is Golden Paste for Dogs?

Golden paste is a turmeric-based anti-inflammatory that was originally created by an Australian veterinarian, Doug English. This combination is great for managing pain and inflammation and is a natural alternative to veterinary medications. My modified recipe incorporates an additional anti-inflammatory ingredient suggested by one of our subscribers—let’s dive in!

Key Ingredients in the Modified Golden Paste

This recipe only has four ingredients:

1. Turmeric

The primary ingredient is turmeric, a powerful spice used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Its active component, curcumin (95% concentration), is a well-researched anti-inflammatory with various benefits, including:

  • Pain relief
  • Liver health
  • Support for inflammatory diseases, such as dry eye, autoimmune skin conditions, and joint issues

2. Coconut Oil

Next, we have coconut oil, known for its medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), especially lauric acid. Coconut oil provides anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral benefits. It’s also beneficial for:

  • Brain health, especially for dogs with seizures
  • Digestive health, promoting easier food breakdown and reducing gut infections
  • Metabolism support, potentially aiding in weight loss

3. Ground Ginger

Ginger, a common kitchen spice, is the third ingredient. The active component, gingerol, is especially beneficial for:

  • Reducing nausea and car sickness in dogs
  • Serving as a natural remedy for vomiting and bloating
  • Acting as a natural pain reliever and possibly providing anti-cancer benefits

4. Ground Black Pepper

Finally, we add black pepper, which significantly boosts the absorption of turmeric in your dog’s system, enhancing the anti-inflammatory and painkilling benefits.

Preparing the Golden Paste

Here’s how to make this modified golden paste:

  1. Combine the Turmeric and Water:
In a pot, add ¼ cup (60 ml) of turmeric and ½ cup of water. Boil and then simmer until it thickens into a paste-like consistency, about 10 minutes.

  2. Add Coconut Oil:
Add ¼ cup of coconut oil to the paste. If the oil is solid due to a cool environment, let it melt gently in the warm mixture without overheating to preserve its nutrients.

  3. Add Ginger:
Mix in 1 tablespoon of ground ginger, stirring well to blend it into the paste.

  4. Add Black Pepper:
Finally, add 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper to enhance turmeric absorption.

Once the ingredients are fully blended, your golden paste is ready! Store it in the refrigerator, where it will stay fresh for about 30 days.

Dosage and Precautions

The paste is quite concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Start with a small amount—about ¼ teaspoon per 50 pounds of body weight, given twice daily. When introducing it, go slow:

  • Start with a tiny amount to check for any adverse reactions.
  • Watch for gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea.

Serving the Paste

I find it easiest to add the paste to a small treat or food that my dog, Tula, enjoys. This way, I can ensure she gets the benefits without any fuss.

Golden paste is a fantastic option for middle-aged or older dogs, like Tula, to support natural pain and inflammation relief. Give it a try—this simple kitchen remedy might be just what your dog needs.
