Hi, I’m Dr. Andrew Jones. Today’s the big reveal — I’m showing you exactly what I feed my dog, Tula.

I get asked this question all the time: “Dr. Jones, what do you feed your own dog?”
So in this post, I’m breaking it all down — everything she eats in a day and why.

Tula is now 15 years old, still running ahead of me on walks, and full of energy. Whatever she’s eating seems to be working pretty well.

Yes, She Still Gets Some Kibble

Okay, confession time: I still feed Tula some kibble. Not a lot, but a portion each day.

The brand I use is Acana, a Canadian company with a great track record for making one of the better kibble options available. Tula’s on their Senior Recipe, which has a moderate protein level and added support for her age and liver health.

What I like about this brand is their focus on:

• High-quality animal protein as the first ingredient

• Grass-fed and humanely raised sources

• Healthy fats from ingredients like herring meal for omega-3s

• Pumpkin, lentils, and chickpeas for natural fiber

• No corn, wheat, or cheap fillers

Yes, kibble is processed, but Acana uses lower-temperature cooking to minimize harmful compounds like HCAs (heterocyclic amines) — chemicals linked to DNA damage and cancer risk. Lower heat means fewer toxins and more nutrients preserved.

Tula gets just under half a cup of kibble per meal. It’s the base layer of her food — but not the main event.

Fresh, Gently Cooked Food

The next part of her meal comes from a company called Dog Standards, which makes gently cooked, grain-free dog food.

The recipe I feed her is their Chicken Formula, and what I love most is that I can recognize every ingredient — ground chicken, sweet potato, carrots, chicken liver, broccoli, salmon oil, taurine, and calcium.

It’s lightly steamed, so it keeps the nutrients intact while improving digestibility.

Dog parents report improvements in:

Research even shows that dogs on fresh, whole-food diets have higher levels of glutathione, the body’s “master antioxidant” that’s linked to longevity and overall health.

Tula weighs around 25 pounds, so she gets about 1½ cups of food a day, half of which is this lightly cooked blend.

Adding Some Raw for Variety

Tula also gets a small scoop of Big Country Raw, a prepackaged frozen raw mix.

It includes:

• Ground chicken and bones

• Beef heart, liver, kidney, and spleen

• A touch of veggies for micronutrients

Raw food offers enzymes and nutrients in their natural form because it hasn’t been heated or processed. In my years of practice, the healthiest dogs I’ve seen were often those eating raw or partially raw diets.

I give Tula about one tablespoon of raw food daily — she loves it.

The Supplements I Use

Along with real food, Tula takes a few supplements that help keep her joints, liver, and immune system strong.

1. Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Canine Advanced Plus

This is my complete vitamin and mineral blend with added:

• Glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM for joint support

• Probiotics for gut health and immunity

• Omega-3 fatty acids and turmeric for inflammation control

• 95% curcumin extract and taurine for cellular health

These nutrients are epigenetic modifiers — meaning they help switch on “good” genes that protect against disease and turn off “bad” ones that promote it.

2. Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Liver Support Formula

About a year ago, Tula’s blood work showed elevated liver enzymes. She started taking my liver support formula, which contains milk thistle, SAMe, dandelion root, turmeric, and vitamin E.

These ingredients help the liver detoxify, regenerate, and reduce oxidative stress. After about a year on it, her liver enzymes nearly returned to normal.

SAMe is also great for joint health, brain function, and heart health, and it boosts glutathione — another key to healthy aging.

Tula gets two liver chews per day, crushed into her food.

3. Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Omega-3 Formula

Omega-3s are essential for inflammation control, skin health, arthritis, and cognitive function.

Tula gets 1,000 mg of krill oil daily. I use a garlic press to squeeze the capsules into her food (it’s much easier than trying to make her swallow them).

Her Daily Routine

Tula eats two meals a day — morning and evening.
Each meal includes:

• A bit of Acana kibble

• Dog Standards cooked food

• A scoop of raw mix

• Her supplements

I’m slowly reducing the kibble and increasing the fresh and raw ingredients because it’s healthier long term.
