Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in our bodies, found in virtually every cell. A significant amount of magnesium is stored in the bones, and it is essential for over 300 different enzyme reactions in our bodies. Lately, I’ve heard a lot about magnesium, and you wouldn’t believe the variety of ways it can be beneficial.

Personal Experiences with Magnesium

Personally, I’ve found magnesium incredibly helpful. I’m currently recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, and magnesium has helped ease my painful muscles. My acupuncturist recommended it, and it’s worked wonders. Additionally, my father-in-law used it for heart arrhythmias as a key alternative treatment, and my wife found relief from severe migraine-induced vertigo with magnesium. These experiences show magnesium’s diverse therapeutic potential.

Top Five Therapeutic Uses of Magnesium for Pets

1. Cardiovascular Health

Magnesium is vital for muscle contraction, including the heart, which is essentially a large muscle. Low magnesium levels are linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. It also plays a crucial role in nerve function and has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce stroke incidence. For pets with heart conditions or arrhythmias, magnesium supplementation can be essential for maintaining normal heart rhythm and nerve function.

2. Anxiety and Cognitive Health

For dogs suffering from anxiety or older pets displaying signs of cognitive dysfunction, magnesium can be beneficial. It helps in brain adaptability and healing, influencing both short-term and long-term memory. The primary benefit for anxiety lies in its ability to modify the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, resulting in reduced cortisol levels and, consequently, less anxiety.

3. Bone Health

Magnesium is a critical component of bones. For pets with bone fractures or aging pets losing bone strength, supplementing with magnesium can provide the necessary building blocks for maintaining bone integrity. This is especially important since pets often receive ample calcium, but not enough magnesium.

4. Gastrointestinal Health

For mild stomach upset or constipation in pets, magnesium can offer simple and effective relief. Products like milk of magnesia utilize magnesium hydroxide to reduce stomach acid and help with indigestion. Magnesium also draws additional fluid into the colon, aiding in constipation relief by relaxing the smooth muscles.

5. Seizure Management

Research has shown that low magnesium levels can decrease the seizure threshold in animals, making them more prone to seizures. For pets with epilepsy, magnesium can be a critical part of treatment, especially since up to one-third of pets do not respond well to conventional medications.

Recommended Forms and Dosages of Magnesium

Magnesium comes in various forms, which can be confusing. After extensive research, I recommend magnesium bisglycinate, which combines magnesium with the amino acid glycine. This form is highly bioavailable and tends to have fewer side effects. For dosing, start with one milligram per pound daily. For a 25-pound pet, begin with about a tenth of a 200 milligram capsule daily, and adjust as necessary, especially if your pet is prone to seizures.

Consider Magnesium for Your Pet’s Health

Magnesium offers a wide range of health benefits that can significantly enhance your pet’s quality of life, particularly for those with specific health conditions.
