You Won’t Believe What Licorice Root Does for Pets! 5 Awesome Benefits!

Licorice Root: A Natural Remedy for Your Pets

One of the most effective and surprising treatments I’ve used is Licorice Root. It’s not the same candy you used to enjoy as a child, but rather a powerful herbal remedy that I’ve seen work wonders for both dogs and cats.

My Experience with Licorice Root

I recall one of our dogs, Jesse, who had severe allergies and could not stop licking his groin, especially at night. It was frustrating because nothing seemed to work. I tried numerous remedies, but the one that finally gave him relief was Licorice Root.

Why Licorice Root Works

Licorice Root is known for its natural anti-inflammatory properties, making it especially useful for pets dealing with skin irritations or allergies. However, many human herbal supplements use alcohol as a base, which isn’t ideal for pets. That’s why I always recommend avoiding those products for your furry friends.

Licorice Root for Dogs and Cats: A Natural Remedy

Licorice Root, scientifically known as Glycyrrhiza glabra, is a root that originates from southern Europe, Egypt, China, and India. It belongs to the legume family and has been used for thousands of years for a variety of health benefits. Famous historical figures, including King Tut, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon, used licorice root for its medicinal properties. In fact, Napoleon reportedly consumed so much licorice that his teeth turned black from the juices!

In Chinese medicine, licorice root has been used for centuries to treat conditions like sore throats, coughs, and gastric pain and ulcers. Similarly, in Ayurvedic medicine, it has been used to treat poisonings, viral respiratory infections, hepatitis, and post-surgical wounds. While modern licorice root is most commonly found in candies, it remains a wonderful natural option to incorporate into your pet’s diet for a variety of purposes.

The Active Ingredient: Glycyrrhizin and Its Side Effects

Glycyrrhizin, the active ingredient in licorice root, is naturally very sweet—about 30-50 times sweeter than sugar. It is commonly used in candies, but it can have adverse effects if used improperly. Glycyrrhizin should be used cautiously in pets with the following conditions:

  • Heart failure
  • Heart disease
  • Fluid retention
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease

It is important to not use licorice root for more than 14 days at a time. Additionally, it should be used cautiously if your pet is taking thiazide diuretics, cortisone, or cardiac glycosides, as licorice can prolong the half-life of cortisone.

Uses of Licorice Root for Dogs and Cats

Licorice root has a variety of therapeutic uses for pets, from allergies to digestive issues. Here are some of its most common uses:

1. Allergies: Natural Corticosteroid Alternative

Licorice root contains glycyrrhizin, which acts as a natural corticosteroid. Unlike synthetic corticosteroids, licorice root does not weaken the immune system. It enhances the body’s anti-inflammatory processes and can be used alongside conventional treatments like hydrocortisone therapy.

Dosage:

  • 1/2 ml of tincture per 20 lbs of body weight, twice daily
  • Use for up to 14 days only

2. Cough and Sore Throat Remedy

Licorice root is well-known for easing congestion from coughs and colds. It acts as an expectorant, helping loosen and expel phlegm, and it has a soothing effect on irritated mucous membranes.

Recipe:

  • 1 ml of Licorice Root Tincture
  • 1 tbsp of dark honey
  • 1 cup of green tea

Give your pet 1/4 cup per 20 lbs twice daily for cough relief.

3. Topical Anti-Itch Treatment

Licorice root can be used topically to treat skin issues such as itching and irritation. This remedy combines the soothing properties of licorice with coconut oil and lavender oil.

Recipe:

  • 1 ml of Licorice Root Tincture
  • 1 tbsp of coconut oil
  • 5 drops of lavender oil

Apply topically to the affected area twice a day for 7-14 days.

4. Relieve Stomach Ulcers and Digestive Support

Licorice root has antibacterial properties and can help relieve stomach ulcers. It is beneficial for digestion and soothes irritation and inflammation of the digestive tract. Licorice is approved in Germany for treating painful spasms associated with chronic gastritis and is used in France for bloating, impaired digestion, and gas.

For long-term use, it’s best to use Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Extract (DGL), which lacks glycyrrhizin.

5. Anti-Inflammatory and Immune System Support

Licorice root has broad-spectrum antiviral activity and can be effective against viruses like herpes, HIV, hepatitis, SARS, and influenza. It is also used as an alternative to immunosuppressive drugs, helping to modulate an overactive immune system, such as in cases of autoimmune skin disease.

Dosage and Administration

Licorice root can be administered in different forms, such as tincture, tea, or deglycyrrhizinated extract (DGL). Here’s how you can incorporate it into your pet’s routine:

Tincture:

  • 1/4 ml per 10 lbs of body weight, once to twice daily
  • Most tinctures contain about 200 mg of licorice root per 1 ml
  • For allergies, start with twice daily for at least 3 days

Tea:

  • Brew 1 teaspoon of dried licorice root per cup of water
  • Dose: 1/4 cup of brewed tea per 10 lbs of body weight, daily

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Extract (DGL):

  • DGL is ideal for long-term use, such as for chronic acid reflux
  • Dosage: 0.1 grams per 10 lbs, three times daily
  • Available in chewable tablet form
