1. Chicken Hearts

First up are chicken hearts. These little powerhouses are brimming with protein and essential nutrients like amino acids, which are crucial in preventing conditions like DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy) in dogs. They are rich in iron, important for red blood cell health, and zinc, which boosts the immune system. Chicken hearts also contain high levels of omega fatty acids and coenzyme Q10, both known for their benefits in combating heart and gum diseases. For a healthy, happy pet, I sometimes cook up freerun chicken hearts for Tula, my dog. They’re inexpensive and a fantastic way to enhance your dog’s diet. You can give one chicken heart per day to a medium-sized dog, making sure to adjust their kibble intake accordingly to avoid overfeeding.

2. Pumpkin and Pumpkin Seeds

Next, we have pumpkin and pumpkin seeds. Pure canned pumpkin is a fantastic source of fiber and rich in nutrients like beta-carotene and flavonoids, which are vital for your dog’s vision and immune system. It also acts as a prebiotic, fostering gut health. Then there are the pumpkin seeds—unsalted and full of omega fatty acids. They’re also known for their natural antiparasitic properties. A teaspoon of canned pumpkin per 10 pounds of body weight can be added daily to your dog’s meals. If using pumpkin seeds for deworming, a half to one teaspoon per 10 pounds is ideal, applied in a cycle of several days on and off.

3. Salmon and Eggs

Salmon is excellent for dogs, packed with amino acids and essential fatty acids, which are beneficial for conditions like allergies. It’s also a good source of minerals like zinc and selenium. Eggs are another superb option, providing highly digestible protein and essential vitamins. Adding a bit of canned salmon or an egg to your dog’s diet a few times a week can significantly improve the quality of their protein intake.

4. Additional Vegetables: Broccoli, Cucumber, Zucchini

These veggies are rich in essential minerals like potassium and magnesium, important for nerve and muscle function, and high in vitamins that boost bone and heart health. Chewing on raw broccoli can also help clean your dog’s teeth. However, introduce these slowly into your dog’s diet to ensure they digest them well.

5. Fruits Like Apples, Blueberries, and Cranberries

Apples, particularly the peels, are high in vitamins and antioxidants, which are great for dogs with allergies. They also help reduce dental plaque. However, make sure to remove the core and seeds, which can be harmful. Blueberries and other berries offer similar benefits, being rich in antioxidants and fiber.

6. Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and beta-carotene, an antioxidant that’s great for your pet’s health. They’re also tasty and can be baked and added to your dog’s diet in moderation.

7. Greek Yogurt

Finally, Greek yogurt is a fantastic source of protein and probiotics, essential for maintaining a healthy gut. Ensure it’s natural and free from added sugars or flavors. A tablespoon per 10 pounds of body weight can be safely added to your dog’s daily diet.
