So is the food safe or not? Purina says yes, while others say no.

Is Purina Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Purina refuting ‘online rumors’ saying its Pet Food is safe… .
Purina is refuting “online rumors" that have raised safety concerns about its Pro Plan pet food, after some social media accounts alleged that the pet food maker’s products had sickened hundreds of animals, mostly dogs but also cats.
The company last week moved to dispel concerns shared in TikTok videos, some of which were viewed by the thousands, as well as in a public Facebook group with nearly 80, 000 members called Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time.
The posts related accounts of dogs having seizures, diarrhea and vomiting, with some allegedly dying, which the pet owners claimed occured after the animals ate Purina Pro Plan food. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t have a recall listed for any Purina products.
Purina says this…
“The false statements may be creating unnecessary stress for pet parents. There are no health or safety issues with any of our products, and they can continue to be fed with confidence, " the St. Louis-based subsidiary of Swiss conglomerate Nestlé said last Friday in an online statement responding to what it called “online rumors."
The last confirmed FDA recall for a Purina product was a voluntary one on March 10, 2023. That voluntary recall applied to the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental prescription dry dog food, with the recall attributed to “potentially elevated levels of vitamin D."
Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time group
But this is an update from the Facebook group, and it definitely has me thinking about what I will be feeding my dog.
Since 12/5/23 in my Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time group on Facebook we have 940 dogs / cats (698 dogs, and 242 cats) in USA Ireland , UK, Serbia, Hungry & Canada that are sick from Purina, 229 of which have died. The problem seems to date back to May 2023. The common denominator was they were all eating Purina. Some of the homes and rescues have multiple pets who are impacted. This is just in one group. So we know the problem is widespread. The problem seems to date back to May 2023. I alerted 9 holistic vets and we started tracking the issues.
Our tracking showed that the concerns are with all Purina brands and now we also have many sick dogs and cats eating these foods:
- *Purina
- *Instinct
- *Stella and Chewy
- *Pure Balance
- *Royal Canin
- *Merrick
- *Orijen
- *Organix
- *Taste of the Wild
- *Hills
- *Acana
- *Blue Buffalo
Many pet food manufacturers get their ingredients and vitamin mixes from the same supplier. So when one food has an issue many others do as well.
If you or someone you know is feeding this food (regardless of product line), I recommend you stop the food immediately. Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or for the manufacturer to issue a recall.
Symptoms: Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness and seizures, rapid weight loss , excessive urination, rectal bleeding, vomiting blood, red/yellow eyes , excessive urination.
These are some of the suggestions from the FB group, modified by Dr J:
1. See your veterinarian: Blood work, IV fluids, have the seizures treated
2. Stop the food immediately.
3. Save the pet food. Do NOT release it to Purina in any circumstances
4. Report it to the FDA (https://truthaboutpetfood.com/report-a-suspect-risk-pet-food/)
5. Report it to the pet food manufacturer
Do NOT agree to send them the food
Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Other manufacturers may follow suit. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Then they were offering pet parents $10 in coupons.
This is the Facebook group
Best Wishes,
Dr Andrew
P.S. What is presented in the Facebook group is concerning-there are many shared suppliers, and there has been issues in the past with vitamin/mineral toxicity from these mixes.
None of these big companies can test every batch of food.
I personally am switching my dog’s food to another brand.
P.P.S. Our guaranteed toxin free Omega 3 Fatty Acid supplement can help with most of the common dog/cat health conditions (ie Arthritis, Allergies, Immune Support, IBD, Cognitive Function).
