Why I’ve Been Feeling ‘Off’ Lately: Let’s Chat (Storytime with Dr. Jones)

Hey everyone, Dr. Jones here. I wanted to take a moment to connect with you all and explain why I’ve been a bit “off” lately. I know I haven’t been as active on the channel recently, and I haven’t had the chance to respond to as many comments as I’d like. Some of the videos, if I’m being honest, I think could have been better. So, what’s been going on?

A Family Update

About three months ago, my mother-in-law, who lives right here in Nelson, was diagnosed with a serious form of cancer. It hit us all pretty hard. We’ve been deeply involved in her life, especially since she’s been a big part of our kids’ lives as well. The diagnosis wasn’t great, but there was hope. We thought that after undergoing chemotherapy, she’d go into remission and be able to lead a normal life again. She’s in her mid-70s, so we hoped she’d be able to visit family back in Nova Scotia and enjoy her days.

But, unfortunately, the chemotherapy came with serious side effects that she just couldn’t recover from. By the time she started recovering from those side effects, the cancer had spread so much that she began experiencing even worse symptoms. Just over a week ago, she passed away. It all happened so fast. From the time of diagnosis in early September to her passing in early December—it was only about three months. She had no warning signs, and none of us expected it to progress this quickly.

Reflecting on What Really Matters

I am deeply grateful for the time we had with my wife’s parents, especially since they chose to live here and be a part of our lives and our children’s lives. It was an honor to help care for my mother-in-law during this time. But, as you can imagine, it’s been tough. And when something like this happens, it makes you reflect on life and what’s really important.

You just don’t know what’s going to happen, right? Whether it’s your dog, your cat, yourself, or anyone else you care about—life can change in an instant. One minute, everything’s fine, and the next, things can change dramatically. It’s a reminder to stay present, to really value the people around you, and to cherish the relationships that enrich your life.

I’ll admit, I’ve sometimes gotten caught up in the busyness of work and life. I haven’t always spent as much time with family and friends as I should. But when something like this happens, it’s a wake-up call. It’s a reminder to get your priorities straight and focus on what truly matters.

Thank You for Being Part of This Journey

I also wanted to take a moment to thank all of you—whether you’re a long-time subscriber or just stumbled upon my channel. I often get caught up in the numbers—the 500,000 subscribers, the millions of views—but at the end of the day, it’s not about the numbers. It’s about the individuals—the dog lovers, the cat owners, the pet parents who are here because they care about natural pet health and wellness.

I’m so grateful that you’ve put your trust in me and my channel. My hope is that I’ve been able to help you and your pets with natural remedies, health tips, and overall wellness advice.

Looking Ahead

So, that’s where I’ve been and why I haven’t been as engaged as I’d like to be. Life happens, and sometimes things don’t go as planned. But I’m excited about the future. I’m looking forward to creating more content in 2022 and continuing to help you take better care of your dogs and cats.

Thank you for your patience, your support, and for being a part of this community. I truly appreciate each and every one of you. We’ll see you soon!

Take care,
Dr. Jones

  1. As an elder orphan (a senior, no kids or living family), your mother in law was lucky to have the support of your family at the end of her life. Love is the most important component of life and we cannot control all the ups and downs, but we can love. I am sure your mother in law felt deeply loved by all those that assisted her at the end. She did not have to deal with her illness alone and feel abandoned. That is a reason to be grateful. The fact that you are a bit off since her illness is testament to your love for her. I wish you and your family the best as you heal from your loss.

  2. Thank you for sharing your loss with us. I hope your family can become closer as you heal together.

  4. First of all my deepest condolences to you and your family for your great loss. I’m a first time viewer and I was searching for help with my Lab/Pitt rescue. She just came out of season and has a discharge. I watched the video you had about open pyometra. I signed up for the free book and then your blog. This is the first blog I watched. I can barely see the screen through my tears. My heart breaks for you I am truly sorry for the loss of your mother in law. There has been so much loss in the last two years I’m overwhelmed with grief. I will pray for you and your family’s heavy hearts. May you find comfort in your memories. God Bless You and thank you for your selflessness and your time helping everyone with their fur babies. Thank you so much.
