How I Adopted Cassian: A Cat’s Journey to His Forever Home

Celebrate Adopt a Shelter Pet Day with My New Shelter Cat
Today is Adopt a Shelter Pet Day—a perfect moment to celebrate the incredible animals waiting in shelters for a second chance… and to share my heartwarming story of adopting an awesome new shelter cat!
How I Found Cassian
Back in late December, my family and I were on the lookout for a new feline friend, and that’s when I found Cassian, a charming tabby at the nearby SPCA. We had been searching for a cat who could handle the busy household—one who was comfortable with being handled and, of course, ready to become a YouTube star.
While browsing Petfinder, I came across Cassian’s profile. After looking at him, my wife Catherine said, “I love him already.” So, we made the three-hour trip to Cranbrook to meet him in person.
When we arrived at the shelter, Cassian was a sweet, affectionate tabby. Unfortunately, he’d been returned after a previous adoption. He had lived with another cat that didn’t get along with him, and they fought. As a result, he urinated in the house. But even then, he was so affectionate at the shelter, happy to be handled and eager for love.
We also have a small, not-so-confident dog named Tula, so we made the decision to adopt him. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to work out as smoothly as it has.
Cassian’s Transformation
It took Cassian about three weeks to warm up to us. He spent many days hiding under a chair, but we were patient, giving him the time and space he needed to feel comfortable. And now? His true personality has really shone through.
He’s become an amazing companion—extra affectionate, playful, and always near me when I need some calm (or when I need a paw on my keyboard). There was never any issue with him urinating around the house. In fact, he and Tula have become the best of friends, with Cassian clearly taking the lead as “THE BOSS.”
Why Adopt a Shelter Pet?
Adopting a shelter pet like Cassian doesn’t just change their life—it changes yours, too. Here’s why I believe adopting from a shelter is such a rewarding experience:
-
Unconditional Love: Shelter animals know they’ve been given a second chance and show their gratitude every day.
-
Save a Life: Each adoption opens up space for another pet in need of a loving home.
-
Health Benefits: Studies show that pet parents experience lower stress levels, better heart health, and increased happiness.
-
Surprise Connections: You never know—you might find the perfect pet, just like I did with Cassian.
If you’re considering expanding your furry family, I can’t recommend the shelter adoption experience enough. There’s a Cassian out there for everyone!
Give Love, Get Love—Adopt!
If you’re thinking of bringing a new pet into your life, I truly believe adopting from a shelter can be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. You’ll not only be giving them a home, but you’ll also be gaining a loyal companion who will bring you so much joy.

P.S. If you’re thinking about adopting a pet, I highly encourage you to check out your local shelters. It doesn’t always work out, but when it does, it’s a win-win for both you and the pet.
P.P.S. Whether you’ve adopted a pet or not, I suggest adding an inexpensive daily supplement to help your new pet stay healthy. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most studied supplements in veterinary medicine, supporting everything from allergies and arthritis to immune function and even cognitive health.
We’ve been using it with Cassian for his mild allergies, and it’s worked wonders. If you’d like to try it, our Dr. Jones’ ULTIMATE Omega-3 Formula for Dogs and Cats is a great option for your pet’s health!
