Dog and Cat Homemade Liver Healing Diets

As a veterinarian, I’ve observed that an appropriately formulated fresh diet can significantly prolong survival times and enhance the quality of life in pets with liver disease. Through my practice, I’ve seen good results with pets fed a specifically formulated diet, whether it’s home-cooked or raw. Generally, cooking tends to be more beneficial for the liver than raw diets.

Understanding the Liver-Friendly Diet

The primary goal here is to provide a diet that’s easy for the liver to digest, aiding in its natural healing process and supporting liver cell regeneration. I advise against feeding dry food to pets with liver issues because fresher foods with more bioavailable, lean proteins tend to be more effective. The quality and digestibility of food play crucial roles in managing liver disease. It’s important to maintain moderate to low fat levels in their diet, especially since dry foods can contain high carbohydrate levels, ranging from 30-70%.

The Protein Debate in Liver Disease

The topic of restricting dietary protein is somewhat controversial. Most of the testing and research have been based on processed food, which provides limited solid findings. Although there is no clear consensus on the exact level to which protein intake should be reduced for pets with liver disease, I recommend moderate levels of fresh and bioavailable proteins. These should be slightly lower in phosphorus to support hepatic regeneration and prevent a negative nitrogen balance. Excellent protein sources include chicken or turkey breast—both are bioavailable, easily digestible, and low in fat. Eggs are another superb choice, rich in choline which aids in fat metabolism by the liver.

Carbohydrates and Fats

Carbohydrates should be included in moderate amounts, focusing on types that provide specific nutrients beneficial for liver healing. Sweet potatoes are an excellent choice for dogs (but not for cats), rich in anti-inflammatory beta-carotene and antioxidants like Vitamins A and C. When it comes to fats, it’s essential to limit intake since the liver exerts considerable effort in bile production. Reducing fat intake can thus lessen the liver’s workload. Typically, we recommend 2-7% fat on a wet basis and 10-15% on a dry matter basis.

Specific Diet Recommendations

Dog Liver Diet:

• Chicken Breast/Turkey: 1 lb (2 cups) – A great bioavailable protein source.
• Sweet Potato: 2 cups – High in beta carotene, Vitamins A and C.
• Eggs: 2 – A great protein source, high in Vitamin E and choline.
• Kale: 1 cup cooked – Beneficial for liver health, high in quercetin and antioxidants.
• Sunflower Oil: 1 tablespoon – Provides additional Vitamin E.
• Omega 3 Fatty Acid: 1500mg – Anti-inflammatory properties.
• Calcium Supplement: ½ teaspoon of ground eggshell (1000mg).
• Dr. Jones’ ULTIMATE Canine Health Formula: 2 scoops, or 1 adult multivitamin/mineral tablet.

Cook all food ingredients, chop up chicken, mix with sweet potato, eggs, and kale, let it cool, and then add vitamins and supplements. Feed 1-1 1/2 cups per 20lbs daily.

Cat Liver Diet:

• Chicken Breast/Turkey: 1/2 lb.
• Sunflower Oil: 1 teaspoon – Provides additional Vitamin E.
• Omega 3 Fatty Acids: 500mg.
• Calcium Supplement: ½ teaspoon of ground eggshell (1000mg).
• Taurine: 500mg.
• Dr. Jones’ ULTIMATE Feline Health Formula: 1 scoop, or 1/4 adult multivitamin/mineral tablet.

Cook all food ingredients, let them cool, then add vitamins and supplements. Feed 1/3 of a well-packed cup twice daily.
