Effective HOCL Spray for Dogs and Cats: Stop Skin Allergies, Hot Spots & Infection

Itchy skin, hot spots, gunky ears, slow-healing nicks—these are the repeat offenders I see in allergic pets. In this post, I’m sharing a simple tool that helps on contact: hypochlorous acid (HOCl). It’s a gentle, bio-friendly spray that cuts down bacteria and biofilm, calms irritation, and supports faster healing—safe even if licked. I’ll show you how I use it on hot spots, minor wounds, ear flare-ups, and those stubborn interdigital cysts, plus exact routines that actually fit real life. If your dog or cat is stuck in the itch–scratch–sore cycle, this is a smart, low-risk place to start.

New Natural Spray for Dogs and Cats: Allergies, Hot Spots, Ears, and Wounds

I recently came across a natural product that can make a huge difference for our pets. It’s been shown to help with skin issues caused by allergies—things like hot spots, recurring ear infections, and even wounds, burns, and abscesses. The product is called hypochlorous acid (HOCl), and I’ll show you what it is, why it works, and how you can safely use it on your dog or cat.

What Is Hypochlorous Acid?

At a recent pet product trade show called SuperZoo, I was introduced to hypochlorous acid. The science behind it is fascinating.

  • Naturally occurring: It’s found in our white blood cells, where it works to kill bacteria and even has antiviral properties.

  • How it’s made: Commercially, hypochlorous acid is created by running a small electrical current through salt water. This process produces a mild acid that’s safe yet powerful for skin health.

  • Proven history: It’s not new—hypochlorous acid was actually used in World War I to disinfect battlefield wounds.

Why It Works for Pets

Hypochlorous acid helps in three major ways when applied to wounds or irritated skin:

  1. Reduces pain

  2. Improves blood flow, which speeds healing

  3. Kills bacteria and biofilm on the skin surface

It’s safe for dogs and cats—even if they lick it. This is one of the few products that’s non-toxic, non-irritating, and has virtually no side effects.

Real-World Uses for Dogs and Cats

Here’s where I see hypochlorous acid being especially helpful:

  • Hot Spots: For red, inflamed, oozing areas caused by allergies. Spray 3–4 times a day for 5–7 days.

  • Chronic Wounds: Clean the wound, then spray directly on top, 3–4 times daily for the first few days, then twice daily until healed.

  • Ear Infections: Use as drops or an ear flush to clear debris and fight bacteria/yeast. Apply 5–7 drops, rub the base of the ear, and wipe clean.

  • Dental Care: A light spray into the mouth helps reduce bacteria and plaque. It tastes like mild salt water, so pets don’t mind it.

  • Interdigital Cysts: Spray directly between the toes to reduce bacteria and inflammation.

My Experience with Tula

My dog Tula has a chronic nasal infection. I’ve tried coconut oil and CBD oil topically, which help, but I’m now testing hypochlorous acid spray on her. Twice a day, I give a light spray around her nostril. It’s safe even if a little goes inside, and I’m hopeful it will help calm her ongoing irritation.

The Product I Recommend

One brand I like is from Goldie Pet Essentials. Their spray (called Miracle Mist) and ear cleanser are simple, effective, and completely natural—made of only three ingredients:

  • Water

  • Salt

  • Hypochlorous acid

They’ve formulated it at an ideal pH (around 5), which makes it especially effective compared to other similar products.

Final Thoughts

Hypochlorous acid spray won’t cure every allergy or skin problem overnight, but it’s a safe, natural tool to add to your pet’s care routine. It helps reduce itching, speeds wound healing, and provides relief without the risks of steroids or harsh drugs.

If your dog or cat struggles with allergies, chronic ear issues, hot spots, or minor wounds, this spray is worth having on hand.
